Insufferable MC that never got better despite the arc begging for it to falter that way. I try not to DNF and power my way through most things, but this was PAINFUL.
I originally bought this book because I thought there would be more mystery (hello? serial killers?). But there was no mystery (what??). It was really just this woman who's doing her dissertation on serial killers and suspects her "hot neighbor" to be one in her paranoia (spoiler, he isn't and he's the love interest). Just romance, and I was really hoping for a serial murder mystery since I'm on my murder mystery kick, so I was disappointed.
Oddly not what I expected. The cover and the blurb lead me to believe I’d be reading a darker, campier romance. Instead, we got a golden retriever MMC, a black cat FMC, and a fairly standard (mildly) enemies-to-lovers rom com.
I liked both of the main characters, even enjoyed the side characters and of course the cat. But the entirety of the serial killer element was wrapped up in the dissertation and had no real manifestation in the rest of the setting or plot. I was hoping the MMC would be sketchy, or there would be a local murder case to solve… but instead, Sam was lovely and completely wholesome, and Phoebe was sullen about her parents’ divorce. Just kind of bummed.

I’m sorry it just got so boring and the characters didn’t feel completely rounded and everything felt flat and I was just BORED
Tbh I just really got frustrated with the use of the “every man’s” trope and the slow, minimal character development.
It was still cute. I mean
“how do you feel?”
“Taken care of.”
Ugh YES please! But that’s about it.
