I don't think I've ever rated a book 1.5 stars. I genuinely tried to get through it, but about 40% of the way through, I just couldn't. It was too much like We Were Liars. Don't get me wrong - We Were Liars was a really good book, but this one just felt forced. Like, if you want to write a prequel, maybe lay off the ghost theme? Or make it a little bit different? I don't know. That's just my own opinion. I hated it and it ended up being a DNF. I would much rather just read a summary of the book then have to suffer through it.

Edit: I read the summary, and holy crap. It really did get good after I stopped. Which kind of makes me regret my decision, but what the hell was that ending? Like, what? I'm not gonna pick up the book again just to read Carrie's thoughts, but it really was just getting good after I stopped. So if you're looking to pick up this book again, just be warned that it's really slow throughout the first half, but in the second half, it gets really really good.

I don't even know where to start. This book was okay, I guess. Nothing special. It started very slowly for me, I'd say I was rather bored until passing the first 100 pages, which is, again as I mentioned with We Were Liars, almost half of the book. I wouldn't say that this was a bad book to read, but I was waiting for something more to come. I'm the type of person who must connect to and like the characters to some extent to stay invested in the story, but this is not that type of a book. Carrie was neutral for me; sometimes I was annoyed with her, sometimes I thought she was over-dramatic (especially with the parts where Lockhart put unnecessary line breaks...why?!), even sorry for her, but mostly I felt really distant from any of the characters of this book. I guess, maybe this was the writer's intention, but this type of writing just doesn't tick the boxes for me. Again, this wasn't a bad reading experience, but I'll probably forget about it in a couple of weeks.

Second book I’ve read in a row about rich young people getting away with murder, idk what that says about me.

p22: please don’t get addicted
p23: there is literally no pleasing harris
p25: yuhuh what did i say. 16 is way too young to have no one watching you
p50: it’s probably meant to be because of the codeine that

p179: gosh bess is brave, i’d be too terrified to talk to my sibling like that if they had carrie’s issues in case they spiralled and offed themselves. maybe it’s because she’s the youngest so she doesn’t quite understand the seriousness of this situation beyond her own feelings. i’m not saying bess is wrong to say something, i just couldn’t do it
p196: pfeff was never gonna give you what you need, not when he either has a very low opinion of himself or just doesn’t care
