I'll be the first to admit that the plot in this latest book was a bit weak and far too convenient in parts, but I love the town of Eerie-on-the-Sea and all its occupants. My fondness for the two main characters, Herbert Lemon and Violet Palmer, certainly colors my opinion of this book. I love that we finally resolve plot elements a long time in the making, and that we come to understand the backstory and motivations of Eerie-on-the-Sea's less savory side characters and villains. While you aren't exactly rooting for them, you come to understand why they have become such unpleasant people. And I think that is an important thing to teach a child. It is important for children to learn compassion for the personal plight of others you disagree with the actions of--or even people who have wronged you--while also learning not to justify the poor actions of those individuals. Very good. I docked this a star because some of the plot resolutions near the end were too convenient and the fact that almost everyone got a happy ending as a result really didn't work for me. That might not bother others, however, so I definitely recommend reading this entire series even if the end fell just a little flat for me.

Read this with the kids. It's the last book in the Malamander series. Great books! Highly recommended for your 7-10 year old kids. Would love to see this as a TV or movie series.
