This book is incredible. History is one of my greatest passions, I read about it all the time, I actually work in a WW2 museum, and still I have never read anything as powerful as this. Women at war are often looked over, or their impact is reduced and ignored, but this book brings to light stories from the hundreds of women who saved the eastern front. If you have even the smallest interest in war or Russian history, read this. It's heart shattering but so so so incredible.

War stories, when told by women on the front lines, have an entirely different tone than those told by men. Powerful and important, this collection of stories is not an easy read but it’s heartbreaking and inspiring the lengths they went to fight the fascists. Never underestimate the will to survive.

This book was such a terrible and beautiful look into the minds of hundreds of women who served in the Red Army during WW2. I did the audiobook edition and the narrators were absolutely spectacular.
I had to take breaks over the 5 days I read it because it was the unfiltered realities of war and is hard to learn. In the US, we barely learn about the large part the Soviet Union played in the war, let alone what it was like to be in their military - especially as a woman. Especially because the US is STILL getting pushback on women being in the military. Yet women were on the front lines in the Red Army in 1941.
Highly recommend!
