i reread about 50 pages of this today and maybe it's because it didn't really register the first time but i’ve just realised how our main character is so relatable in some aspects (when he has to pretend to be happy and feel like a part of society)

Well-written and kept me engaged until the end, This was nevertheless not really my bag- too much of that nihilistic flavored existentialism so done to death by Camus and Mishima and Sartre. Ennui and alienation don’t move the needle for me. How is it that Notes of a Crocodile takes the same themes and basic story and make it darkly funny and yet poignant and yet No Longer Human elicited no real emotional reaction ? I guess I just don’t really enjoy modernism.
