sometimes i need to read these slow, ponderous, sad books where nothing and everything happens.

this is a very good one of those kinds of books.

it is at once devastatingly and predictably sad.

it is the kind of sad that makes your heart clench because you totally recognize the narrator's feelings and know them to be universal and part of the human condition, but it is so stupidly sad that the universe is the way it is that your heart clenches, and it clenches because you recognize that we all go through this dumb shit, and it clenches because why must we go through this dumb shit, and etc etc etc....

if you're in that kind of mood, it's a worthwhile read

This started out as a great book, written very well. I enjoyed the descriptions, the relationships, the characters. Up until the last 10 pages, I would have given it a 4 star. But leaving so many loose ends is a huge turn off. I wouldn't recommend this book based on the ending.

Beautifully written, I really enjoyed this book.

Stillferdig, tilbakeholden, edruelig, hverdagslig, enkel, troverdig, fascinerende, dramatisk og spennende historie, fortalt på en stillferdig, tilbakeholden osv måte.

I really loved this book. Well written with a beautiful, slow paced and touching story, and some unexpected events along the way.

I was surprised at how much I liked this book. It is not my usual sort of read as is the case with most book club titles. Though the pace was slow, it kept my interest and was quite moving.

4.4 its a beautiful book full of atmosphere . You can almost hear the water in the nearby stream.
The end was a bit disappointing for me - i wondered how is he going to end it and was left with a bit of questions regarding the NOW of the story line.
Definitely recommended and ill definitely look for other books by Per Peterson.

I picked this book up at random at Powell's. Although there was a definite dramatic trajectory to the book, there was also a quietness to it, perhaps a restrained use of language, that downplayed any of the dramatic events in it. I enjoyed it, even if the ending was simply that -- the book just ended.

Quiet and melancholy, and set in a northern climate. Perfect. I savored every line.
