Gorgeous artwork, fun writing (only a couple of times did I feel little bit like it was for younger audience) and it really made me want to go read comics in a way I don't think anything else ever has!

I admit it. I mostly got it for the GLORIOUS illustrations but the reading was usually pretty fun, too. If a bit heavy-handed in the area of "teaching moments based on characters" which is understandable considering this is, technically, a kids' book with an emphasis on Girl Power. Which meant I was most impressed with the way the author addressed some of the important but not-nice bits of characters and kind of cloaked some of the super heavy stuff. It was there but not "Hello, and then she was mind-control-raped" blatant. I am left with one question, though. Am I the ONLY flippin' person who remembers and finds it Very Important that bit of history between Rogue and Carol Danvers? Totally left out of this book, not even mentioned in passing, despite the "rescued when falling from the Golden Gate Bridge" mention which was directly after the contact point.

I've been following artist Alice X. Zhang for years, ever since I discovered her work on DeviantArt, so I was excited to pre-order this book, and it does not disappoint. The work is dynamic and diverse, with lots of energy and body types, typical of her style.

The writing is also good, with positive messages about leadership and strength, but also fragility and failings, not because the subjects are girls/women, but because they are human. Although a lot of the slang is going to seem dated later on, the message is still a good takeaway no matter the era.

Very helpful for grasping each character's general story and approach and how many of them are connected to one another, but the didactic, "just keep trying!" "girls need to help other girls!" "fight the patriarchy!" "it's okay if you're not perfect!" bits got a little old whilst reading one entry after another.

This world is full of glass ceilings, unequal power dynamics, and people who deny the powers inherent in girls and women. As Lorraine Cink writes, "Whether you were born a girl, identify as a girl, or just appreciate how darn cool girls and former girls (or as you might call them: women) just so happen to be, we know that being a girl can bring you great and unfold powers." This book details some, but not all of the powers a girl can have, whether they be inherent, gained over time, overt, or subtle. I look forward to seeing what a young generation raised on books like these does to expand on these powers. Go out and save the world, girls. You are powerful beyond your wildest imaginations. 😍

This was a cute read with seriously gorgeous art. The ladies featured are MCU (or almost-MCU) titans along with ladies who are really big in comics right now. This book is written for younger fans, but thankfully fans of any knowledge level should enjoy it.

What surprised me was that there weren't any X-Men. Not even Storm, Rogue, or Jean Gray. Also, Nadia van Dyne but not Janet? Interesting choices of who to include!
