I really enjoyed this. It was an interesting change from the usual given the "X-file-esque" nature to the story (hard to describe without spoiling).
It had the usual elements of a police procedural investigating a killer. The main character had a troubled background which we got drip fed to us, incase it was linked to the investigation. Riley also had issues with a colleague who was jealous that she (a woman) had been promoted ahead of him to Sergeant and also spurned his romantic advances after a one night stand.

I think the setting of "small town America" was well down as were the characters. You could really imagine them, think this would work well as a TV series.
Yes the author does give her dramatic licence a good bashing for the ending, but it is called "fiction" for a reason.
As this is the first in a series it will be interesting to see where the story goes in subsequent books. Will it pick up the story of the investigation or Riley's backstory (again not giving details so as not to spoil).
With thanks to the Pigeonhole and Erin for the opportunity to read.

The plot of The Fields seemed quite promising at first but I was bored fairly quickly and at times struggled to pick it up to keep reading. I was probably not the right audience for this book as the plot didn't grip me at all and even at the point when all the various storylines were being explained and connected, I just wasn't interested. It felt at times quite unrealistic (a body is found on farmland but the police sergeant spends the first few minutes with the farmer discussing his crops and the upcoming State Fair!). I felt it was quite messy too; just a lot going on all at once and even though the storylines were all wrapped up at the end, it just wasn't enough to turn the book around for me.

I haven't picked up a crime/thriller in such a long time, but I saw this one on NetGalley, and it intrigued me, so I just had to request it. Enjoyed is the wrong word for this book, with its cannibalism, its murders, its corruption, its political statements - the list goes on - but once I got into it I was really hooked, and read it all in only three sittings.

Like: I liked that it was different from anything I've read before, and I liked the fact that it genuinely kept me guessing until the end. Sometimes with thrillers you can guess the ending right at the start, but it wasn't the case for me with this one.

Didn't like: the book is a little bit confused in its identity - is it primarily a crime thriller, or making a political statement about big agriculture, or about the character development of the female police officer MC? I'm not saying a book can't contain all of these things at once, but I'm not sure it felt it had a coherent focus. Maybe that's just me! It's still a great read.

Thanks to NetGalley for allowing me to read this e-ARC version.

So excited to be apart of the blog tour for THE FIELDS by Erin Young. Out today!

If you love Tana French’s detective duos or Jane Harpers THE DRY but are looking for something with less expository prose, you will enjoy this crafty, atmospheric read.
