read like an airplane mystery, and i didn’t hate it

It starts with a body in a corn field. Sergeant Riley Fisher realises the victim is a childhood friend connected to a dark past she thought she had left behind.
This was pretty standard police procedural. I was engaged with the story throughout and felt it had decent pacing. I would have liked more from Riley back story but I'm guessing that will come in future books. Great start to a series.
Thank you to Netgalley, Hodder and Stoughton and Erin Young for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. So sorry this one fell through the cracks and is a very late review 😔

Graphic, felt less haunting towards the end as I figured it out but it is absolutely a thriller

⭐⭐⭐⭐✨

Very focused on ptsd due to sexual assault of the protagonist. Hit too close to home and came too often for comfort.

VIBES⇩
  • procedural crime thriller
  • graphic details of gruesome murders
  • Iowa setting
  • it’s all about the corn
  • multiple POVs

PROS⇩
  • You will not see this ending coming…it was f*cking crazy.
  • Despite my struggles to stay in the story…I still caught on to most of what was happening by the end reveal.
  • The narration was decent…but it could’ve been much better with additional narrators.

CONS⇩
  • There are a lot of characters to keep track of.
  • It gets rather political…like agriculturally political and I found it to be tedious at times.

Riley Fisher is a newly minted head of the investigative division of the Black Hawk County Iowa Sheriff’s department when the brutally murdered body of her one-time best friend is found in a corn field. Riley has a lot to live up to as her grandfather (now suffering from dementia) was the well loved and respected Sheriff at one time. Riley is also carrying a lot of baggage, trauma from an incident when she was in high school that was never resolved, a tense relationship with her brother and his ex-wife, and troubles in the department from a fellow officer who resents her promotion. When the case starts to involve more murders and a mysterious link to big Agriculture, and possibly the Gov. of Iowa Riley goes off the grid to pursue leads on her own, partly to protect her past secret and to try and protect those she loves. I love police procedurals, especially those set in small towns and The Fields was a great start to a new series. I can’t wait to see how Riley resolves all the conflicts that still exist in her life.
