Pg 1. "He made me so mad at first that I wanted to kill him. Then, later, when I had to kill him, it was like having to shoot some of my own folks." Very straightforward. Tells you exactly what your getting... What kind of book am I reading??

Pg. 7 "Then he'd had to go act a fool and get himself killed." Did, did he now?

Pg. 60 " After that, I couldn't do enough for Old Yeller... What if he did fall over and yell bloody murder every time I looked crossways at him?" :)I love that dog:)

Pg. 81 "And of course he'd smell so bad that I couldn't stand him and have to go off and try to sleep somewhere else. Then he'd follow me and get his feelings hurt because I wouldn't let him sleep with me." Don't blame him; I wouldn't either.

Not as vivid scene of death as The Yearling, but still a painful event. I'm so fond of the ending! Not really sure why some people rant about not liking this book. It might not be a favorite but still well written and toned.

I guess I’m doing a little bit of classic YA reading, but I have no idea how I missed all of these classics when I was younger!

Like Old Yeller by Fred Gipson. Old Yeller is a mangy dog who Travis ends up loving. Old Yeller protects the family, helps them while Travis’s father is away, and becomes part of the family itself.

Unfortunately (and you find this out on page 1, so I’m not spoiling anything), Travis must kill Old Yeller, which breaks his heart.

This is a classic boy-and-dog story.

The book reminded me a lot of the dog books I used to read when I was younger, and I’m sure younger me would’ve loved this book. For me now thought? It was good, I guess. It was just predictable. It was sad but it was easy to see what was coming less than half way through the book. Sure, you’re told at the very beginning that Travis had to shoot old yeller, and at first you’re wondering why, but then you can make a pretty educated guess on why less than half way through. It was a quick easy read. It wasn’t bad, it wasn’t great. It was just meh.

Coming in here with the coldest take I possibly could - hey, Old Yeller is a sad book, y'all.

I think I've seen the movie, but I've been on a big kid's lit kick lately and have been running through old classics that I hadn't read and thought I'd look to see what the actual book had to offer.

I actually really enjoyed it. The voice of the narrating kid was really consistent and the real story seemed to be about him gaining the responsibility of growing up while still managing and surviving the intense emotions of childhood. His grappling with his crush on Elizabeth and his love-hate relationship with his incredibly shitty and annoying little brother were just as richly written as his tragic friendship with that thievin' yeller dog.

I also hadn't realized how far in the past this book was set. We're talking, like, immediately after the Civil War (and yes, I'm pretty sure that would make all these characters Confederates, but try not to think about that). So a lot of the interest for me was actually in this story as a historical novel - how did they live in such isolation? What did they eat? What was their community like? Holy crap, are cows and 30-50 feral hogs really that dangerous? Yikes!

All in all, very interesting and then very sad. No surprises on that, but plenty of surprises on what else this book held.
