Read this as a young boy and loved it. Read it again as a parent to my children and they enjoyed it.

"But that isn't the only way life is. A part of the time, it's mighty good. And a man can't afford to waste all the good part, worrying about the bad parts. that makes it all bad....You understand?"

I understand. Fred Gipson gives us lots of good parts here.

All I will say is this shit made me as sad as the movie did when I was a kid.

Just finished listening to this as an audiobook . I am broken , just broken ! I remember years ago I watched the movie with my grandmother as a child and I always believed that the heartbreak that I felt then was due to my young age and the black and white outlook of a child . I was so very wrong , it was a great story with well told lessons on the fairness of life and the strength needed to be a decent person in a cruel world , and what real strength is . I think that this is a classic that all should read , but one that will take days to recover from .

Fred Gipson's Old Yeller - another classic I missed when I was a child. Travis is a boy on the verge of manhood in 1800's Texas, when Old Yeller enters his life. Although Travis doesn't see the dog's worth right away, he eventually grows to love Yeller. When the story came to it's inevitable tragic end, it had me crying like a baby.

The story of Old Yeller is touching, and the love and loyalty that the characters have for each other, will stay with you long after you've put the book down. It's easy to see why this book has endured through the years to become a perennial children's classic.

Very slow in the beginning but, improved as the book went on. Not super impressed with this book but still enjoyed it. The ending was really sad and surprising.

This was such a heartbreaking pleasure of a read! I honestly do not know why I’ve never read this before! The film was great but the book was such an enjoyable experience and highly recommend it!

I recently introduced my husband to the old Disney movie, Old Yeller, and decided to look and see if there was a companion book. I'm a glutton for punishment so I hunkered down with tissues to read.

Some of the writing matched the movie word for word but there were also scenes that were not in the movie which was a fun surprise. I ended up not needing the tissues. Although the same outcome, there were distinct differences between the two mediums. Glad I read this.
