I know this is deemed a classic and a must read. I also know that the writing style was supposed to create the athmosphere but to me it was just too simplistic and descriptive. It held me back from really visualising the story. I did cry... But that is mostly because I am unable to read books about dogs without crying. Do I think everyone should read this? Not really. I feel this speaks to a specific audience, however when you do read it, I hope it can take you on an adventure where I haven't been able to go.

Astoundingly classic! Can't believe I never read this as a child. Read out loud with all the kids (3-10) and they adored it. We all loved that dog by the end and were so touched (and I'm not a dog person). Beautiful message of love and the hard parts of life, wrapped into a fascinating frontier story.

Mooi verteld, prachtige tekeningen, heartbreaking einde.

Not sure why I picked this one to re-read because I remember so vividly how the ending made me cry. The second time around produced the same results, but it's such a great story, the tears were worth it. I just love a great dog story.

I read this in sixth grade. It didn't keep me very interested. The sad is very sad though.

"But that isn't the only way life is. A part of the time, it's mighty good. And a man can't afford to waste all the good part, worrying about the bad parts. That makes it all bad... You understand?"

I finished this secretly at work and cried my eyes out behind the walls of my cubicle. This was an exciting and adventurous tale, yet very emotional. I enjoyed how we were able to see how Travis's distrust of Old Yeller gradually turned into an irreversible love and dependency on one another.
The story itself is already captivating but once you add the imagery and character development, it's an amazing read.
This is a story about how an adolescent boy takes on the task of caring for his family farm while his father is gone, and how he proves to be a man after all.

DNF. I almost quit when this little brat was kicking a dog, but thought it would stop. Then he starts throwing rocks at it? PASS. I knew how it ended but didn’t know the animal abuse it contained to get there. Glad I never had to read this as a child. How terrible.

Read in a day. The moment I was dreading was quick and less drawn out than in the movie.

this book was way more realistic than I thought it would be for a children's book. this 14 year old kid has to do EVERYTHING for his family to keep it alive, and everything felt very high-stakes and deadly. If I was a kid reading it, I think I would have been scarred for life even without the Old Yeller bit.
