It's finally Jilly's book!!! Jilly is a side character in every(or almost every) other book in this series so far, she's the energetic, upbeat, helpful, understanding girl with a really triggering past and intimacy issues as a result. In this story she's struck by a car and hospitalized for a number of injuries including paralysis in an arm, a leg and partial face, as a painter this is devastating for her. The only silver lining is that she is finally able to cross into the dreamlands in her sleep where she can use her body like she always did. Unfortunely in order to truly heal she is going to have to face her traumatic past as well and deal with her feelings of abandoning her sister in that hell hole of a home when she ran away from all the abuse.
This is a traumatic childhood abuse story with some details so check trigger warnings before diving in, but I loved finally getting to know more about Jilly.

Not for me. Urban fantasy. Feels too much like it was written in the nineties, which it was. Doesn't transcend the tropes of that time period, unfortunately. I might try De Lint again, however.

Not as good as Forests of the Heart, and contains such a large cast that it can be hard to keep track of everyone. Definitely one for folks who have read the rest of Newford series.
Minor: Animal cruelty, Child abuse, Chronic illness, Drug use, Emotional abuse, Mental illness, Rape, Sexual violence, Violence, Medical content, Kidnapping, Grief, Murder, Toxic friendship, Injury/Injury detail
Good story. It looks at child abuse & artists who paint fairy pictures with olde beings who step back and forth between worlds combining the mystical with the social. And overcoming one's past.
I think of this one as Jilly Coppercorn 1.

Abandoned for now as I've declined to return to it for some time.

I am re-reading this after about 16 years. I forgot how much I love this author. He understands the power of stories, and in particular fairy tales.
I'm a huge Charles de Lint fan. This was really as good as his other work, but I like Jilly so much that this was a little disappointing. He really puts her through the fire in this one.
