Thank you to NetGalley and Kodansha Comics for a chance to read this manga in exchange for an honest review. It was an adorable story about two cinephiles who bond over their love for movies. The blurb is very accurate, this is a wholesome story perfect for people who enjoyed Given or I Hear the Sunspot. The story is not unheard of but I thought the execution was pleasantly surprising. Their love story unfolds in a very heartwarming and straightforward way and the author avoids the cliche storyline that most BLs have in which the characters have a long series of misunderstandings and are unable to confess to one another. I loved how their bond seemed genuine and the way they communicated with each other. This was a fun read that is perfect for a peaceful summer afternoon much like the ones that they were having, perhaps accompanied by a cup of cold coffee. You shouldn't expect anything extraordinary or unique from the story itself as you probably read titles like this before with similar plots, but I can assure you that the way the storyline unfolds will be less frustrating! I would recommend it to anyone who wants to have a pleasant reading experience with cute and loveable characters who are able to communicate with each other.

The Summer of You follows two high-school boys with a shared love of movies getting to know each other over a summer, and after a surprise confession, slowly developing into something more than friends...

This was a short, sweet and light summer romance.

The story won’t stick with me for a long time, but it’s exactly what it sets out to be. I think it captures first loves really well, full of butterflies and awkwardness.
The main characters were well developed, and although we didn’t see much of them, I loved the side characters- Wataru’s school friends and older sister.
I also really appreciated how Wataru responded to Saeki’s confession, it was one of my favourite parts of the novel!
We got to visit a number of locations over their summer together which made for a really cute setting throughout, and it was fun to explore them alongside the characters.

There was a (spoilery) plot point used here that felt a little questionable and didn’t seem to fit with the rest of the story. I liked the message that came out of it, but not how they got there. I feel like the same message and resolution could have been reached in a different way and been just as effective.
It was also hard to tell who was speaking at times due to the placement of the speech balloons, especially during back and forth dialogue, but it didn’t detract from the story too much.

If you’re looking for a cute BL with minimal angst, pick this one up!

Thank you to NetGalley and Kodansha Comics for providing this e-arc in exchange for an honest review.

This was really cute. Ended a bit conveniently, but I didn't mind. The biggest problems are the speech bubbles, it's hard to tell who's talking sometimes. I like the art and Wataru as a character is so fun. I'll definitely read the next volume.

---mild spoilers?---

Saeki's backstory with his mom is never really explored, which left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth. It had the potential to fall into transphobic tropes, but thankfully didn't go anywhere. Still weird to just drop it though, it feels like it was just put into the book for the romance.
