Not for me.

I just didn’t feel invested, I didn’t buy the romance (at least Wataru having feelings for Saeki) and it pulled that thing I don’t like where they shove in the characters having met as children to make it more meaningful.

What I thought was just a story that wasn’t that new: regular kid is friends with really popular guy that everyone wants to date. He’s secretly into the regular kid and the regular kid grows flustered and confused when he finds out. Not exactly a novel BL storyline.

It somehow was even less appealing with the added backstory that these two didn’t meet by chance at a video store and bond over a love for movies. While not novel and exciting, there’s the appeal of the popular guy liking being around there regular kid that gets the obsession he has with film.

Instead, this story turns into “Hey, my mother used to mess with me psychologically by forcing me to wear girl’s clothing, which I absolutely hated. You found me in a forest one day, made me feel like I could finally tell her I hated it and I’ve been obsessed with you ever since. That organize meeting where we happened to bond over film wasn’t organic at all; it was orchestrated. I followed you into that store intending to make you my friend”. It’s not really cute and the story changed completely.

So, I get that others enjoyed this but it just wasn’t for me.

Rounding up to three stars.

What a nice manga to pass the time with on a grey August Bank Holiday.

While I didn't get swept up with the story like I hoped when I requested this on NetGalley and there were several elements that I wasn't a fan over
SpoilerThe relationship between crossdressing/mother wanting to have a daughter and later on turning out gay, as well as some moments that felt a tad queer-baiting
, this was a nice slice-of-life/first summer romance read.

It just wasn't for me.

Historia bonita y sencilla. Para quien necesite más romance adolescente gay mientras esperamos el tomo 5 de Heartstopper.

It was an okay and cute read with no real problems (which is already better than a lot of bl) but it didn’t really make me feel excited or anything.

CW: Child Abuse, Forced Crossdressing

This book was so good! We follow Saeki and Wataru, two boys who meet in a video store and bond over their love of movies. This is a sweet Friends to Lovers story that will make you feel warm like a sandy beach. I can see this being made into a movie, if it hasn't already.

she really said "i'm not finna refresh these tropes" and bc it's BL that meant a 🤨 moment of dubious conduct but at the end of the day she be writing pretty straightforward fluff with nice clean art there's just no depth to the story 😔
