This book always makes me reflect on our own time, and it makes my heart ache to the point that I can usually not finish it.
Graphic: Rape, Suicidal thoughts, Suicide, Kidnapping, Religious bigotry, Pregnancy
I expected all things dark and depraved. I expected violence, despair, and pain. What I did not expect were the delicate moments of Atwood's prose that convey such a deep sense of hopelessness that it completely and utterly shattered my soul. I've never truly imagined what it would be like to be without the ability to write down my thoughts. It will take awhile before I recover from envisioning that kind of reality.
When I think about the dystopian conditions in Handmaid's Tale (which are only a "follow-it-to-the-end" version of disturbing religious ideologies held today) I don't just think about the incredible horror it is to lose all agency, but also the great loss as a result of dimming a woman's brilliance. Women are meant to write. They're meant to spread awareness and create, even if we just have to tell the tale in our heads.

An INCREDIBLE book! I read this breathlessly for my sophomore English class. I loved not knowing what was happening and finding out slowly. I hope the TV show is true to the book. A feminist masterpiece, terrifying in how real it could become. An all-time favorite. So excited for the sequel-- I just looked it up and it comes out in two months!!!

i read the testaments first for school and it took me a while to read this one because of the style it’s written in. I def enjoyed it and wouldn’t mind reading it again because the narrative and beginning of the story is a bit fuzz for me. i’m think if i should watch the tv show…? or maybe just some yt videos that explain it all for me
