Gory, so so gory. I’m happy to say though that I actually really enjoy Khaw’s writing style. I had heard it’s not for everyone but I like it. This book felt like a fever dream from start to finish, super dark and gory, I wouldn’t say scary though. Will read other books by them!

Jesus, I consider myself of strong stomach but this book nearly made me quit. The descriptions in it are very vivid and very, very gory!

Confusing and bewildering, but in an enjoyable way. It is subtle and opaque, a look at freedom, truth, and how the stories told about us can shape how we are perceived even when reality is greatly divergent. Control and the loss of freedom are destructive for both jailer and jailed. An interesting take on the mermaid tale.

All the little descriptive metaphors were so vague and obtuse that it circled back around to just being not descriptive at all. And she uses so many of these metaphors. There’s probably like 10 unnecessary nonsensical metaphors on every page, and they do nothing but bring the storytelling to a screeching halt in pursuit of i suppose just sounding a bit more poetic. A swing and a miss more times than not. A very tedious read for sure. The description of gore in this book is pretty good though. I thought using medical terms was sickening in a good way.

Overall not recommended though!
