This book was super interesting and captivating. A mermaid and a plague doctor don't make the most obvious couple, but the way that Khaw wrote them was enticing. The horror and gruesome nature of this book makes it one of the first true horror books I think I've read. I was constantly cringing and waiting for parts to be over so I wouldn't have to listen anymore.
That being said, sometimes the prose was so dense that I found it challenging to understand what was going on. Especially listening to the audiobook, I would often tune it out because I found it so hard to follow.

Juuust my kind of horror. Gruesome and unforgiving, with beautiful writing. It was wonderfully brutal, with lots of body horror, which I really enjoy. My only complaint, is, as usual, on the romance that develops suuuper fast between the MC and the Plague Doctor. It's hard for me to believe in unshaken devotion of this level for people who've known each other well such a short time. It was still an incredibly well crafted fantasy horror novella. Loved it.
