Felt Asian culture was represented pretty accurately, was a funny book although the romance wasn't the strongest

This book was described as “Crazy Rich Asians” meets “Bridget Jones Dairy” - I went in expecting it to be funny, over-the-top comedy similar to Dial A For Aunties, but instead, the family was such a minor part of the story (or at least the first half that I read). It was way more “Bridget Jones Diary” and rom-com than it was family drama. I kept waiting for the family to appear more, and when they still hadn’t since the first chapter, then I gave up reading this book as it was just a very mediocre rom com.

This book is hilarious

Here is the thing, I loved the cultural tidbits in Last Tang, I loved the poems and all of the romance. However the main character frustrated me, the romance between her and _ was long drawn and when we finally get the piece we want its like 3 pages. I was just taken on a rollercoaster that had lots of waves and no big drop. I just wanted to finish the book to finish it.

3 stars - I liked Andrea’s slow build romance with Suresh. I didn’t like the feeling that Chinese culture was almost satirized in the obsession with wealth, status, and marriage. While all of that was even more over the top in Crazy Rich Asians, I felt like it was appropriate - the characters in CRA are not meant to be your everyday people (they are crazy rich, after all). In Last Tang Standing, Andrea is pretty typical and relatable, and it bummed me out that she seemed like a caricature of a Chinese daughter in America.

What the fuck did I just read. I was so confused as to who was the love interest until page 360. I can’t I wanted to rip up this book so bad but I had to return it to the library
