Wolves of the Calla

4.12 AVERAGE

The lingo of Calla Bryn Sturgis is addictive as hell and I find myself wanting to adopt bits of Dark Tower slang into my everyday speech -- may it do ya fine -- and the meta in this series is getting magnificent. The structure of Wolves of the Calla was also pretty similar to Roland & co's tenure in Mejis, with the long slow preparation for a single day of action... except with better insight into Roland's ka-tet, fully-fledged gunslingers by his side, more heartbreaking betrayal, robots, better politicking, and an utterly horrifying sideplot involving Susannah. Also, my favourite thing: sneetches.

And I continue to be unable to write long reviews for these books because I just want to keep reading rather than stop to review, oops.

As with Wizard and Glass, this novel was 200 pages too long in its world-building and character design. There are many great things about this book, but a lot of it happens at the beginning and the end. I was happy that Eddie and Jake got their own plots independent of Roland, but Susannah could have used more screen-time. It’s just a little disappointing that her character hasn’t progressed much since book 3.
