Burnett effectively and very movingly used elements of magic realism (in the form of the hand of Creation) to illustrate mankind's ties to Earth and nature, and how being outdoors in nature is so very important to our overall well-being.
While reading this book, I was reminded a lot of my childhood. No, I didn't have a "secret garden", but when I was a kid, my little brother and I would be told to "go play outside". No sunscreen, no bug spray, we didn't wear bike helmets back then (although it is a good idea now remembering how many times I wrecked my bike) - things were just simpler. We'd spend ALL DAY outside in the woods around my parent's house and come home when it got dark. In hindsight, that was some of the fondest memories of my life. I really miss that and in my busy life now, I don't make enough time to be outside, although I do try to make up for it whenever I can during the summer out at my pool. : )
This book is a great reminder (in light of current events of COVID-19) the pull and magnetism and the spiritual as well as physical healing just being outside in nature has for us. This book is wonderful just on its own, but the timing of reading this for me was spot on.

It’s a very nostalgic feeling re reading your favorite childhood book, and was even better than I imagined. I look forward to reading this book with my future kiddos.
This is one I enjoyed as a kid. I tried re-reading it for book club, the theme being “works in the public domain.” I could get past about 20%. Mary is insufferable. I have grown to prefer things that are a bit faster-paced. I know this was a product of its time, but the racism! I really enjoyed the modern graphic-novel retelling “The Secret Garden on 81st Street,” and do not feel any desire whatsoever to continue reading this just to see how true to the original that was.
