Mary was a beastly, spoiled, intolerable racist at the start of the book. Ironically, she had to move back to England to become a more pleasant person.

That said, some of the characters she meets when does go back to England were lovely. Namely, those in the serving class, such as Martha and Dickon.

Martha scoffing over Mary not being able to dress herself at the age of ten was one of my favourite things in the book

Audio books feel like cheating, BUT I wouldn't have 'read' it otherwise.

I read this at least once when I was younger and quite possibly more than that. The story definitely stuck with me and it became one of my favourites. It had everything my younger self loved, orphans, mysteries, nature, secret hiding places.....

I did worry that it would seem to young for me now coming back to it but it definitely didn't. It was nostalgic reading the elements that I had loved and I found a new affection for the story of Mary. The adult characters became a bigger part of the story for me and I felt for them. I appreciated Francis Hodgson Burnett's knowledge of gardening and how realistic she was in describing the garden itself.

I also found the time setting of the book fascinating. This is a real independence story. Mary is not your typical Victorian aristocat's daughter. Even though she is brought from India and in that setting is as much of a characature of that time as you'd expect she becomes so much more as the story progresses. There is definitely more to this story and the introduction by Peter Hunt agreed with my instincts and made interesting reading, although I read it after I'd read the novel as I like to form my own opinion.

A true classic story and a lovely edition. I'd definitely recommend.
