“At first people refuse to believe that a strange new thing can be done, then they begin to hope it can be done, then they see it can be done--then it is done and all the world wonders why it was not done centuries ago.”Why, oh why, did I wait until now to read this?! I absolutely loved it, reading it this morning in one sitting :O) This 1911 story does show some of its age but don’t let this stop you. It is heartwarming and delightful. I loved how it focused on the regenerative effect of nature, exercise and positive thinking. I also recommend the audiobook if you find written dialect problematic. Otherwise, just enjoy it.
“It made her think that it was curious how much nicer a person looked when he smiled. She had not thought of it before.”

This was nice but totally not what I wanted it to be. And also frustating…
All began with a spoiled little girl in the mids of a Cholera outbreak in her manor in india. Cholera epidemic, death, a spoiled yet neglected child. This all Tool me by suprise because it was rather dark for a children book. From there she send to an unkonventionell uncle living in india, were the people around her act again very cold and uncaring towards her. Honestly, Even if she was a little bratty it was sad watching her speit all her time alone but that is also why it felt so rewarding when she found a home and Passion in the secret garden which was quickly followed by a friend in the Animal and nature loving Dickon. Altough this was kinda quick and convenient it was delighting to see these two kids learning by themselves to take care of the garden all bythemself. (If you ignore all the racist stuff Mary and the servants say about Indians at least) This could have been the whole book for all I care.
But then he came. Colin. An annoying sick brat that bursted in and totally took over the book. Mary got shoved into a supporting role and the rest of the book revolved solely about Collins struggles as the son of a very rich man that convinced himself he is ill. From the on the other kids concentrate on supporting Colin in overcoming hiss internal struggles. We were allowed to listen to him Holding speeches on magic. His ambitions. Even the last chapter and ending was dedicated to him and his Dad finally finding each other. The dad that remembered him only after 10 years!! Literally, he was laying on grass and suddenly he was Like „oh wait i have this ugly sick Boy at home I Wonder what he is up to.“ No one ever thought this wrong of him btw. At the end the servants are happy father and son are happy together Like why do we care?? I dont. Mary not found. Dickon and his animals who only existed to make These rich kids feel better about themselve also not found. Their friendship reduced to a plot for the greater good of the personal Transformation of the „Raja“ Colin.
Dissapointing!!

Didn't like the way the characters "talked."
Childhood favorite as a movie. I never realized the whole bit at the end of the movie where all the kids come back after a war was not in the book. Still just as I remember it though. Highly recommended for anyone with preteen children who love you reading to them!
