I love The Secret Garden. It is such a sweet, delightful story.

I think it is necessary to discuss the racism in The Secret Garden. While the language used to describe people from India may have been appropriate when the book was written, it is not today. We discussed the attitudes toward non-white people during our read aloud of this book.

Only four stars because of the shift in focus from Mary to Colin. I feel like Mary gets forgotten over the course of the book, just as she was before the book began.
