Dense, poetic writing and incredibly realistic characters. A lot of this book is like you’re looking at the soul of America… fast food, addiction, broken systems, strained families 😔 But Hai’s relationship with Grazina is my favorite.
“The hardest thing in the world is to live only once.”
“Do you think a life you can't remember is still a good life?”
“That’s what wealth is, he realized: to live in a house where all the tools of living are out of sight.”
“Most people are soft and scared. They’re fucking mushy. We are a mushy species. You talk to anybody for more than half an hour and you realize everything they do is a sham to keep themselves from falling apart. […] People put on this facade of strength. They act like they have a purpose and a mission and their whole life is supposed to lead to this grand fucking thesis of who they are.”
“Because to remember is to fill the present with the past, which meant that the cost of remembering anything, anything at all, is life itself. We murder ourselves, he thought, by remembering.”

I loved the characters and all of their glorious flaws. Grazina was amazing and the way Hai bonded with her, and took care of her, was so lovely.

A stunning piece of art. The plot is so simplistic but is communicated in a way that moves you on a profound level. I loved it.
