Because to remember is to fill the present with the past, which meant that the cost of remembering anything, anything at all, is life itself. We murder ourselves, he thought, by remembering.
this book holds up a little light for people searching for a meaning in a world that often feels cruel or indifferent.

Do you think a life you can't remember is still a good life?

Is it possible for a hole to be cut open and for you to step inside it — not to be destroyed, but simply gone? Where on earth was elsewhere possible?

He wanted too much of one feeling — and I guess his heart gave out because of it.
I don’t think we’re made to hold too much of any one thing.

How, silly, he thought, to believe souls go anywhere at all. Why should they?... What if the soul is just as tired as the body?

We might be beautiful, but it doesn't matter when we're losers. We're short losers. Beautiful, short losers. And it doesn't, do anything for anybody... What good is beauty, any beauty, if nobody wins?

The writing is dense and beautiful; the opening pages give a perfect idea of how lush the prose is.

3.5 ⭐️ overall but rounded up
A young Vietnamese man about to jump from a bridge is persuaded by an old Lithuanian woman, and end up better her live in caregiver.

The story introduces other characters as Hai gets a job,  intertwining family plot lines and meaning of life. I really felt like each characters personalities came to life,  with their mannerisms, philosophies and interactions. A bit of humor sprinkled in too.

The fact thar this is heavily inspired by Ocean vuong relationship with his real life Grazina make it so impactful. As someone who had a loved one with alzheimer's too, the time shifts and memory loss is such a hard topic and area to navigate so I think vuong portrayed this well. Overall a story about willingness to live, memory, and who shapes us by gaining friendship and family in unforseen circumstances.
