I made it about 200 pages before throwing in the towel. The book was interesting, the premise handled from a different angle but after 200 pages, I was uninterested in the characters and it made it hard to convince myself to slog through the remaining two-thirds of the book. I've been told that I gave up just about the point where the book was "starting to get good" but, for what is supposed to be a chick lit/clutch novel, 200 pages is quite an investment for very little pay-off.
I knew going into the book that the main character was to be torn between her husband in post-war Great Britain and her new love in the 18th century Scottish Highlands. But after 200 pages I was not convinced she had a reason to stay in the 18th century or an impetus to return to the 20th century. That said, maybe that was the point?

I resisted these for a long time. Then I started watching the show on a whim, got hooked pretty quickly, and decided to give the book a whirl. I thoroughly enjoyed it and plan to plunge into #2 right away (having had the foresight to get it from the library in advance of finishing #1). I did like it, BUT that said...
- it was rather more rapey and abusive than I was expecting. I do realize that 1743 is not 2017, but the way every woman I know who has read these swoons over Jamie...well, I was surprised.
- the geography seemed...off. Now, I'm basing this off of the map in the book, not off of a personal knowledge of Scotland, but there was one point where Claire, as narrator, was talking about the distances between, I believe, Fort William, Castle Leoch, and Craigh na Dun, and it just did not line up, at all, with the book's map. And the book sure read like they somehow crossed to France, from Scotland, overnight -- maybe i missed something there, but it was jarring.

I spoiled this for myself by watching season 1 of the show first and it's still 5 stars for the way everything played out.
The writing is so rich and really immerses you in Claire's new world. Kind of glad I watched the show first so I could imagine all the characters more vividly. It was also verra helpful in knowing how to read the Scots accent.
Jamie Fraser truly is the blueprint for the romantasy men of today.

Man, I feel like I've been slugging through mud reading this book. And I just kept holding on and holding on because I've heard so many great things but no. Also Claire and Jamie's relationship I definitely saw the bit of chemistry but it wasn't fleshed out all the way for me. Also Claire adjusting so well to what actually happened to her was... odd. Of course was brought up repeatedly but I would like to think it would have been so jarring and traumatic that not only would she be more impacted daily but also she would express that to the people around her. But maybe that was a purposeful writer's choice. Also eventually it just got to the point for me where I was wondering why she wasn't just trying to tell Jamie what had actually happened or at least hint at it to see how he would take it. Because she was causing all of this trouble over people thinking she was a spy when really she wasn't. But yeah biggest critique was that it was so slow that my interest was just steadily declining. It's not as though something interesting was happening every chapter or two but otherwise it was just dialogue that at one point started to repeat itself. So yeah felt like I was wasting my time. Also the multiple attempted rapes and rape descriptions, not great to read for me.
