wow
seriously fucking wow
i barely have words. it took me a long time to finish this book- partly because i started it right before the spring semester began, and partly because i simply wasn’t as interested as i was with the previous 2 books. the beginning was slower than i expected. i had the same experience with the mime order- after getting my first taste of fantasy (the bone season was the first ever fantasy book i’ve ever read and i was immediately hooked), it felt rather boring to go back to london instead of oxford. since i’ve graduated college and have an immense amount of free time on my hands, i’ve tried to dedicate as much to reading as i possibly can, which included finally finishing this series which i loved and desperately wanted to get back into. again, it was slow when i got back in (around page 120, right after they descended to the beneath), but my interest maintained strong unlike before (yay!)
i am so happy i finished it when i did. i was worried i wouldn’t feel the anxiety and desperation and NERVE WRACKING EXCITEMENT that i felt during the first book which i lacked in the second, but i did and it was a hundred times stronger than it was in the first book. holy fucking shit, seriously, i cannot believe how much i loved it. i thought nothing would beat the magic of the first book, considering it was my first ever fantasy, but it was easily overtaken by this book and i can’t wait to see if the next two top it.
for one, i never expected the plot twists and the anguish i felt for paige. i thought her father was long dead. i thought time had passed for vance to broadcast her fathers execution in front of her face. maybe i’m just a fantasy noob, but that was only one of MANY things i was taken aback and shocked by
i loved tom and i cried when he died. i love nick and eliza and maria to bits and pieces. i have so much love for paige it’s genuinely unreal, i love female heroines and i never doubted her strength and will but holy fucking goddamn she blew me out of the water. i’m glad the torture she experienced wasn’t directly spelled out to us, i think it’s a lot more devastating to leave the readers to fill in the blanks. i don’t really have the words to describe it, but the way her torture was described in archon was perfect and brutal
and to top it all off, never, never EVER in a MILLION FUCKING YEARS would i have EVER. EVER fucking guessed scarlett BURNISH to be not only an ally, but i fucking SPY working with “the domino programme, a free world coalition espionage network free working against the republic of scion”!?????? no seriously what the fuck. again, maybe i’m a fucking fantasy NOOB but JESUS FUCKING CHRIST??? god the way my face contorted when i read scarlett helping paige out of archon holyyyyyyy shit. a fucking badass spy are you fucking kidding me???
i’m glad many questions are left unanswered for the next book that i will certainly be reading right after i’m done obsessing in this review. i wasn’t left AS interested and intrigued and ENTHRALLED to read the next book as i am rn when i finished the mime order. like i don’t have the words to describe how fucking IN THIS i am now and how i cant wait to read what’s next. we’re so fucking back dude i can’t wait
samantha shannon i love you bad and i can’t wait to start the roots of chaos once i’m finished this

This series just keeps blowing my mind with every new twist and turn. This book is the shortest of the series so far, but it still packed a punch. There's a lot going on, and every new chapter was more tense than the last. I always think I can see what's coming and then there's a twist that leaves me gasping! An incredible book in an incredible series. I'm so glad I started reading these.
Oh, and I am definitely on the Give Paige A Break train. Poor girl has been through SO MUCH.

I’m reading this series as fast as I can acquire the books. I enjoy the world building most of the time and the slow-burn, B-plot romance. [SPOILERS] Paige’s decision making in this particular book has me going back and forth. Her carelessness as Underqueen, or I guess it’s more that she’s incredibly kind as Underqueen when she just lamented for the previous 2 books about being a criminal and how grimy the syndicate is… doesn’t really make sense to me. I do like the addition of the Beneath and that the pressure was ON with the sensors. It’s my own personal headcanon that Paige being caught did not actually advance the sensors but Vance said it did to mess with her head and reputation. I digress. The last bit of this book is GOOD. I could not fathom why she would surrender and then had so much fun reading more. I also love the language of flowers. What a good touch. I will say it did drive me insane that she tried to distance herself from Arcturus. Hopefully she gets over that in the next book. My last gripe is she’s 20 ??? Or not even 20 yet? I will elect to ignore that info.
