This installment wasn’t as big as I wanted it to at this point in the series. It came across as another serialized adventure of Paige Mahoney rather than really launching into the overarching story.
It felt a little bit contrived to introduce a new villain at this point (Vance), especially since the end of book two positioned Jaxon as another big antagonist. Her father’s execution was also a bit jarring; the lack of closure on their relationship seems like a missed opportunity to add emotional depth to the story and character development for Paige.
I felt that the romance aspect of the series regressed a bit as well in this book. Despite all this, it was still an enjoyable read—Part Three was especially exciting—and the way it ended looks to be setting up a potentially strong comeback with book 4.

Mostly, this book just made me very homesick for Edinburgh. Otherwise, I was once again hooked by the plot and continue to be impressed with Shannon’s ability to build towards and pull off a climactic and satisfying ending.
I would say though, there were a couple of details about Scottish society in this world that struck me as unlikely (though I can only have my own opinion), and additionally, this edition definitely needed an extra copy-edit.

This felt a bit slower than the first two books in the series, although I did enjoy learning more about the anchors workings and travelling to some of the other citadels of scion. Onto the next volume ✌️
