i loved this novella bind up and is more accurately a 4.5/5 stars for me! in comparison to the other novella bind ups i think this one is my second favourite with tales from the shadowhunter academy being my favourite. the novellas in this book were for the majority in the shorter side which i liked and this bind up had two of my new favourite novellas being “son of the dawn” and “the land i lost”. the only thing is i thought that some of these stories were not really that important and also relied heavily on plot convenience. other than that i definitely really enjoyed this book being a big brother zachariah/ jem carstairs fan i thought this book was amazing and i also thought that the final story “forever fallen” was a great lead up to the wicked powers.
This book was great! I was cackling out loud for many portions of the book (I am pretty sure my sister thinks I am insane). I was also yelling no at the book as well. This book makes extremely excited for the wicked powers and sad that I have to wait 4+ years for them.

This is a wonderful book and I certainly plan to re-read it before the wicked powers, was an amazing rollercoaster of emotion. I cried like a baby everytime they mentioned my William and at my poor Matthew. I cried for Livvy, so sweet and so gone. When I saw the two last stories were set on 2013 I wanted to SCREAM. I just finished TDA and was so anxious and couldn't believe I will have to wait until the wicked powers came out. The final let with a great preamble to the next and last (sadly) series.
“This evening the whole sky was bronze, as though to summon wicked powers.”
Pd: Kit deserves all the love in the world and I'm so happy Tessa and Jem get to have a wonderful life together. I don't like Janus, I'm sorry and I know he suffered so much but I don't wike him *chris evan's voice* I HE DARES TO TOUCH OR EVEN LOOK AT MY JACE AGAIN I WILL KILL ME, OKAY? okay. I am obsessed with Herondales you'll see (just like Jem).
That's, I'm out.
this is my favorite collection of novellas that cassandra clare has released. all of them are so good and i was so excited to see so much of jem, will, and tessa. we also learn background stories on the last hours characters which was so much fun.
cast long shadows 4/5 - i think this could’ve been a 5/5 if i read this after reading chain of gold and chain of iron. the only thing that i didn’t love about this one was the fact that i didn’t know any of the characters but it was cool to get a glimpse at them. this explains why matthew has a drinking problem, and is a super sad story. it gives a lot of background on matthew and makes us understand and empathize for him so much.
every exquisite thing 5/5 - i loved this one so so so much. seeing background on anna lightwood and now accepting cecily was of her sexuality was so nice. i loved seeing cecily give anna the clothes that she desperately wanted to wear. we see now that anna is the way she is being so cold and not letting love in because of ariadne. i love them together so much and i want them to be happy. this story was so so good.
learn about loss 5/5 - this was my favorite of the stories because of the ending. it was so so sweet to see will and jem together like how it used to be. i cried so hard because all i want is for them to be happy. and to see them relive their past for even just a few hours brought tears to my eyes. it was also cool to see kit’s ancestors, but the main part that i loved was will and jem together and younger.
a deeper love 5/5 - this one was so good too. it was so sad seeing tessa in so much pain after will’s death. so much so that she didn’t want to live anymore. and she’s reminded of her love for jem when he needs aid during world war ii. i just love them so much and they consoled each other through will’s death.
the wicked ones 3/5 - it was painful to see céline being tricked by valentine. the love potion that was on stephen was very odd and a little bit unsettling. i however did enjoy finding out who the lost herondale was, but sad that sje didn’t want anything to do with jem.
son of the dawn 5/5 - i loved this story of jace coming to live with the lightwoods. just knowing that they become best friends was so amazing to me. any story involving jace herondale is one that i really love. it was just so cute seeing them so young and first meeting. jace was so scared to open up and i’m so glad that he eventually did.
the land i lost 2/5 - this one just didn’t stand out to me at all. the only memorable thing that happened was that alec brought rafe home. magnus and alec’s second child together and that is so so cute. i loved how rafe warmed up to alec.
through blood, through fire 3/5 - it was cool to see how jem and tessa came to find kit. i loved seeing that story and how it connected with lady midnight was so cool. other than that there wasn’t really anything that amazed me.
the lost world 4/5 - this was so cool to see ty in the scholomance and how he was adjusting to life there. livvy is there as well, even as a ghost. but it was interesting to see the extent of livvy’s powers and how she is tied to ty.
forever fallen 4/5 - it was so interesting to see thule jace and what his thoughts were. but why did cassandra clare have to name him janus. that is literally the worst name i have ever heard. but this story sets up a lot for the wicked powers and i’m very excited for it.

5 stars (2nd read 2021). I was sobbing this entire book wtf. When I read this book originally, it sealed my love for Jem Carstairs. Rereading this book brought back and enhanced all the emotions I felt when reading this book for the first time, especially now since I’ve grown to love and adore the characters from TLH. Time for me make me fall in love with books more and more, and that is especially the case with this one. Seeing Jem go from Brother Zachariah to back to his former self is an evolution that I cried and loved. Jem is my favorite character from this entire world and this book is definitely my second favorite in the entire TSC universe.

5 stars. I don’t know what to say other than this book is by far my favorite in TSC like wow. Cassandra Clare you really out did yourself. I love Jem with my whole heart now.
