Long. Very long. How fortunate for me! This weekend I was laid up in bed sick and this audio book kept me company during my bouts of consciousness.
This was a fun story with lots and lots of interesting characters. Many times such a long story makes for a difficult audio book when it comes to keeping the characters straight, but Mr. Dicken's unique characters with their unique speaking patterns makes each one very distinct. On top of that, the narrator, Simon Vance, is one of the best, especially so in this book as he does a variety of voicings and accents.
I recommend. But take your time reading this one. Savor it. It's a good one.

Undoubtedly not Dickens’ best but still very funny. I enjoyed listening to this in serial episodes that match original publication.
Stilted, overly elaborate Victorian prose: check; one dimensional characters: check; unbelievable plot twists and coincidences: check; big-hearted love for humanity in all its frailties: check; moral outrage at the hypocrisies of modern life: check; worthwhile reading: check and double check.
I LOVED IT. It has such a funny feel to it! Yes, it has the usual themes of social criticism of Dickens' novels, and there are some very nasty characters, but this is, at its core, a joyful story.
There are tons of characters, loooots of subplots and of course, a good dollop of intrigue and it got me riveted for the whole ride. Which is over 30 hours, so that's something *laughs*
Nicholas is a wonderful character, interesting and complex. His mother is... oh, well, she's a bit loony but also a good person and his sister Kate is the proverbial damsel in distress. His uncle is, of course, the dastardly villain and he deserves our full hatred, no grey zones here nor final redemption.
And Charles and Ned are the eccentric allies who you can't help but to love. They are hard-working, good-natured, and generous. Yes, they are my favourite characters ♥
There is, of course, the main thread that is Nicholas Nickleby's life, but the structure is episodic, which, yeah, of course it is, but it makes such a brilliant tapestry of characters and adventures that just kept me glued to my phone until I finished the story.
And I miiiiiiiiiight be re-reading more Dickens later, this book reminded me of how much I love him

The start is good, but the book is very long, and when the unbelievable Cheeryble Brothers turn up to save the day, I had to give it away.
I'm a big fan of Uncle Ralph. He's one of the few Dickens baddies I find at all interesting.
The book itself is, I suppose, what you would expect from Dickens, containing: memorable and quirky characters, a sensitivity to the poor and wretched (which is where his best writing comes out, I think), a complicated plot where all characters end up being integral to the inevitable happy ending - complete with wife and fortune.
I also like that in this book the hero can actually do something. He can exact justice and protect his family's honor. There's no "please sir, I'd like some more", but more like, "you want some more?!" I suppose a critic might say that integrity makes a character uninteresting, but damn it, sometimes I want a hero.
