What a fun ride! Emily L. Schneider presents a variation on the "rags-to-royalty" fantasy that is fresh and captivating. Kaida, a human slave, discovers that she is betrothed to the Prince of the Kingdom. Sidenote, he's a dragon. Not only that, but she's also a dragon shape-shifter with magic. The book is a fun adventure that also provides just enough introspection to follow Kaida's inner struggles as she navigates the implications of her new nature, trying to master he knew abilities, and learning to love after a life of pain. Meanwhile Prince Tarrin is forced to grow up too quickly as he learns the perils of leadership, the pain of betrayal, and the importance of having someone he can trust at his side.

I was looking forward to this series and was not disappointed.

It is written well and does a great job of transporting you to a magical world where dragons rule.

Kaida is amazing and a great character modeling resilience. A true phoenix out of flame.

I look forward to reading the rest of the trilogy!

Content warnings: Blood and violence, torture, death

Romance level: kissing and heavy flirting

The FMC was a seventeen year old girl and you could tell. I think the language was a little too young for my liking.

This is the book that supercharged my love for reading again this year! Kaida and Tarrin are now some of my favourite fictional characters! Its a different take on dragons than I'm used to and the plot is full of twists and turns that kept me engaged the whole time. This really is just an all around great book with a world and characters that are so easy to fall in love with! Highly recommend!

Definitely one of the best dragon books I've read in a while! Can't wait for the next one!

Apparently I’m not into shifter books- another KU miss for me
