I thoroughly enjoyed this story, it was really well written, gritty and dramatic, well told and full of emotion. My only criticism would be that the ending, after so much drama and strife, was relatively quick and simple. Not that I am really complaining, I love a happy ending! Sepetys really brings New Orleans to life, smells, sites and all!

What a fun story! I love the stories of NOLA and I want to go and explore the French Quarters. This was a story about choice and rising above your heredity. I think this book would be a very fun movie. It was a good escape into another time and another world.
Ruta Sepetys has made a fan out of me! Shades of Gray was a great, if dark read with a strong heroine. This book brings the same strength of character with Josie. The New Orleans setting was what really sold me. I visited a couple of years ago and found the city very captivating- there's so much character and history. Sepetys captures the spirit of the city and the times.
Also, Willie. The whorehouse madam is really something. Her character weaves all the other threads together. This book is part mystery, part straight historical fiction and 100% a great read from start to finish.

Good but definitely not her best. Reads more like a YA book (though the subject matter wasn't very young adult) and ends abruptly. That being said I was hooked and thoroughly enjoyed it all the way through.
