New Orleans in den 50er-Jahren: Es ist ein magischer Ort, den Ruta Sepetys hier zum Leben erwachen lässt. Die geschilderten Erlebnisse Josies sind jedoch weitaus weniger magisch - sie lebt in einer Buchhandlung und kann höchstens davon träumen, zum Studium zugelassen zu werden.
Doch war hat es ihr verboten, zu träumen? Und wer hält sie davon ab, ihre Träume zu leben?
Das klingt alles in wenig kitschig und einfallslos, aber Sepetys Buch ist alles andere als das. Es ist der Kampf einer jungen Frau gegen die Ungerechtigkeiten des Schicksals, gegen ein Abgeschrieben-Sein von Geburtswegen und eine Suche nach einem Weg raus aus der Armut.
Josies Schicksal ging mir sehr nahe, ich wäre sehr gerne mit ihr befreundet gewesen. Dann hätte ich ihr mal eine lange Umarmung verpasst.
Ausserdem hat sich die Autorin sehr mit der Zeit und dem Ort beschäftigt, sodass ein lebhaftes Bild der Stadt entsteht. Ich liebe es, wenn man mit einem gut entwickelten Charakter auch einen interessanten Handlungsort entdecken darf.
Auch von Sepetys werde ich gerne mehr lesen.

Once again I really enjoyed a book by Sepetys'. I don't think there was quite as much historical aspects to this as her other novels. Either way, I read this in one sitting.
Being dropped into 1950 French Quarter via a novel so well researched was fantastic. The story is driven by character development and the evolution of relationships between the characters. Josie has a whole network of people who care about her and hope for her success despite what her family background, but understanding that enough to feel safe within it is difficult in your late teens. I love that nearly the whole cast is morally gray or deals with struggles brought on by life and family aspects out of their control. Family is who you make it, now and in decades past. This book has great messages, and I'd recommend it for any teenager looking to find their way, especially despite themselves or family adversity.
