So random that this is historically unlike any of her other books. I love Ruta Sepetys and her stories and this was a reread, but I didn't remember much from the first one. A bittersweet coming-of-age story against a sketchy and violent upbringing, really good.

Ruta did it again! What an absolutely brilliant novel! Ruta has got to be one of my all-time favorite authors. Everything about this book was outstanding!

My whole way through reading I was just hoping that Josie would finally make it out. Josie's mother, Louise, was really such a pain to Josie that I really wanted to shake sense in her. And who wouldn't love Jessie ! He was definitely a fav charactor of the book for me. Unfortunately I got bored at certain parts of the novel which is why I gave it 3/5 stars

Loved the characters, plot kept me interested, and I would definitely recommend this.

Murder mystery set during the 1920's. Josie's mother is a prostitute. The only person Josie could count on was the brothel's Madam and a local bookseller and his son. Josie is determined to be more than her mother, by getting out of New Orleans and going to college in the north east. Josie needs to find the funds and get the recommendations to obtain acceptance into college. As she is setting up her future, a visiting businessman is murdered. Josie was one of the last people to see the man, but so was her mother. The police want to catch the murderer, but their investigations may cost Josie her future.

This was an interesting historical novel. It is discusses pieces of history which are not typically covered through YA novels.
