When She Purrs

Spoilers:

The major problem throughout the first half of this book is there is no explanation as for why the MMC likes the FMC so much and it's definitely not apparent because she's awful. She has no personality, is stupid and isn't pleasant to be around.

Her telling the MMC she was going to have to kill him because of her HER scheme gone wrong really demonstrated to me what kind of person she is, not to mention her multiple dumb decisions that led her to that point to begin with. Her selfishness was front and center throughout the whole book and she did not deserve the MMC, who was very sweet and patient with her.

With that being said, the MMC, while very sweet, patient and caring, lied to the FMC unnecessarily multiple times, which was annoying. I understand why he lied, because of his fear that he would lose her and to protect her, but it was difficult to sympathize with his reasoning when it didn't make sense that he even wanted her so much to begin with.

Near the end, just when I thought the FMC was getting less annoying, she assumes, with no evidence to support her assumption, that the MMC was going to leave her. It made such little sense that it's hard to take the character seriously.

Overall, I would have to give this book 3 stars. The FMC is awful, but the MMC does make her bearable and raise the enjoyment level of the story.

Kim and Nassakth are really cute! Both are ex-slaves and set up with farms on Risda III. He starts leaving dead animals on her porch as a courting gesture (because he's a CATBOY), and she thinks he's trying to kill her. They figure it out eventually! The delightful bounty hunter Bethiah is a treat throughout the story.

Reread 10/23/22: Still enjoyable! I forgot Jamef was in this one.

So the first full-length novel of the Risdaverse, which I really anticipated after several too-abrupt novellas, and . . it dragged for me, I'm not gonna lie.

I hit a HUGE reading slump in the middle of this novel, which I thought at first might be coincidence (I did binge Dixon's books during 2020, rendering the tropes a bit tired).

Then I read the author's note and realized that the story dragged and felt directionless because it WAS directionless to begin. Dixon said herself that it was a fun early-pandemic project that kind of grew into a different beast as she went along, which totally aligns with my reading. I actually enjoyed the last third of the book and found it much more purposeful in its plot and clear in its characterizations.

Otherwise, the whole praxiian thing isn't my favorite. It squicks me out how closely Dixon modeled them off cats (also why in this universe do multiple alien species have cats?) It didn't help that the whole praxiian mating culture thing was really skeevy, what with the jerking off over people's doors as a sign of interest and whatnot.

The novel found its legs towards the end, as I said, but unfortunately, for me, it was a little too late.
