I didn't love this, mainly because I didn't really like Kim as a character. Nassakth seems to get a bad deal as far as I'm concerned, even if she does ultimately make up her mind to be with him.

The premise of the story was far more interesting than the story itself, sadly.

I read this because it fit with a book bingo I was doing and while it wasn’t bad, I really don’t think Ruby Dixon is my thing. Even the books that aren’t completely saturated with pregnancy & babies still have way more breeding and “me want mate, want mate to knock up” chest thumping and “oh me oh my, my biological clock is ticking, whatever is a human woman to do” than I can stomach.

This one also should’ve had TWs for sex slavery & forced gladiatorship (also slavery), sexual trauma, and past instances of rape that come up over and over again. If I had been in a different headspace currently it would’ve been triggering. I’m hoping that my saying such will help someone else not be triggered in the future.

That being said… I did like the MMC, he was very sweet towards his mate and the way they connected over the traumas and he was so very careful with her was really nice. I think that’s probably why it wasn’t immediately triggering for me if I’m being honest with myself. He was incredibly mindful and even worried about harming her further, even mentally/emotionally.

I hated all the miscommunication though, the lies, the secrets. That’s another common thread in R. D.’s books that bothers me, I know it works out and they usually talk about it but they’re always so quick to forgive and move on (to breed

Characters:
Kim is genuinely stupid. From the first chapter it is established that she has no sense so I decided I would not take this book seriously. She got better though and is genuinely just a nice person who is traumatized. Nassakth is a cat man ex-gladiator with no clue how to charm a human. Dead animals and jizz? Definitely not. He is pushy but patient and intent on having Kim. He is also a terrible communicator and very tight lipped which was very annoying.

Plot:
This plot was silly and baffling from the very beginning. Wanting a bounty hunter to kidnap a man to be her husband and hope it all works out... Girl what? This however has my favorite parts of Ruby Dixon's writing by having fun interactions and is improved by the lack of insta-love for both characters. And after that all their problems plot-wise are caused by Kim's original dumb decisions or Nassakth inability to communicate reasonably. And then the plot kicked in foreal and I found myself actually caring about the characters and their past and their future and I was surprised how
much they grew on me.

Secret Sauce:
As nuts as this story was, I really enjoyed Kim and Nassakth together. Their relationship had ups and downs but they were able to really talk and connect to each other. It was sweet.

Not sure I could process or get into the concept of Nassakth being cat like. I suppose I pictured them like thundercats…. But there were a lot of cat like traits that made me pause.
  Also… jizzing on her door??

Stars only for the plot and Bethiah tbh
