I can't believe it's come to this, but I'm DNFing a Ruby Dixon.

I loved, loved, loved [b:When She's Married|50357332|When She's Married (Risdaverse)|Ruby Dixon|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1578455619l/50357332._SY75_.jpg|75305242], but I really wanted that one to last longer, so when I saw a full-length novel taking place on Risa, I was super excited. But while [b:When She's Married|50357332|When She's Married (Risdaverse)|Ruby Dixon|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1578455619l/50357332._SY75_.jpg|75305242] was fun and sexy and interesting, this book is slow and sad and disappointing.

Kim is just a terrible heroine. I get it, I get it, she's a former slave and has trust issues, but that's no excuse for being a dull idiot. Seriously, she's just so boring! All she does is whine and complain and overreact to little things. Seriously, when she found out that Nassakth killed a dude that was going to sell her back into slavery, and she got angry and needed "space", it was the last straw for me.

Dixon writes strong heroines so well! Give me more heroines like Georgie, Liz, Faith, Piper and Nadine. They are wonderful characters and so fun to read about. But these whiny, damaged, weak heroines, like Kim, Iris, and Ariana are just so awful. They just don't work, and I wish Dixon would stick with her wheelhouse.

The problem with heroines like Kim is that it makes no sense why the hero would be interested in her. Why on earth is Nasskath trying so hard? Kim has no personality besides being damaged and weak. There's nothing holding them together as equals; he's just a caregiver. The relationship just feels so lopsided.

Additionally, the steam level of this book is pretty low. Does anyone else remember when Dixon wrote Erotica? Over 50% through the book, and still no real sex? The leg humping was a bit too strange for me.

description

And besides the annoying heroine and the lack of anything that felt like a romance, the story also moves incredibly slow. Nothing happens in this book. Really nothing. There's chapters upon chapters describing them just being around the house. There's one scene with a bounty hunter that could have led to something exciting but wraps up mostly off page. And they take TWO CHAPTERS to decide whether or not to go visit Nasskath's parents.

The cameo with the brothers from [b:Deceiving the Corsair|41136873|Deceiving the Corsair (Corsairs, #4)|Ruby Dixon|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1534186699l/41136873._SY75_.jpg|64097115] was cool, but I DNFed after Kim and Nasskath got on their ship. I just don't care at all about this couple, and I don't care what happens to them.

I really liked this story of Kim and Nassakth - the (much!) longer length gave more time for the story to develop and for the relationship between the two of them to really strengthen. After seeing Praxiians as a not-very-nice race in the other Risa-verse books, it was interesting to see how Nassakth was portrayed and the differences between him and the more typical Praxiian culture of his childhood and parents.

Excited to begin reading Sophie's serial now, and hope that Bethia gets a starring turn in the future? She was a fun character!

Another Risdaverse book. This was originally written as a daily serial during quarantine. Kim needs a husband to help protect her farm so she hires a bounty hunter to kidnap one for her. Nassakth wants to be the lucky man so he pays Bethiah the bounty hunter to be Kim's only choice.

Audiobook (audible) - such a funny alien romance novel. Kim is a former slave human who has been given freedom and some catnip like sex plant land to work and live on. Her alien cat neighbor has his sights set on her and while trolling to court her, actually scares her into using a bounty hunter to steal her a husband to keep her and her land safe. Unbeknownst to her, the bounty hunter brings back her terrifying neighbor and they slowly become friends and then lovers with a hea ending.

This began as a serial during the 2020 Pandemic on Ruby Dixon’s page and it was seriously the one thing I had to look forward to every single day. Every day she treated us to a chapter and it was utterly day making.
This is a sweet slow burn alien romance between a human and a Praxxian (if you’ve read any of her Risdaverse Novellas- particularly “When She’s Married”- that helps set this story up although it is a TRUE standalone!). It sets up her second pandemic serial turned full length romance “When She Belongs” very well also. (That one also lasted months and was absolutely wonderful.)

This book was written as a serial, but I read it as a complete story. And as one complete story, it’s long. Perhaps a bit too long. But it’s entertaining. This is the first book I’ve read with a Praxian hero and I enjoyed seeing a Praxian who wasn’t a villain.
