The Flip Side

Thank you to @penguinrandomhouse for my #gifted of The Flip Side. It was refreshing to read a romcom from a mans POV!! This was definitely more com than rom and had me snorting and giggling the whole way through. There is romance in the book and it’s written really well, I got a little teary towards the end. Josh (MC) is not having the best year, so he decides to leave all the important decisions in life up to the toss of a coin. It’s just such a fun read and Josh is someone you really route for as a reader. I mean he’s utterly hopeless & hapless but he’s such a loveable idiot you can’t help but back him. I loved his friends Jessie & Jake, they really are an odd bunch but it’s just so funny. They interact like real people and tease each other relentlessly. This is a fab little read, I hadn’t read a proper romcom in ages and I loved this one! The kindle version is out now for 99p....paperback is coming Nov 26th ❤️

I liked the originality of this book, with taking fate and everything happens for a reason quite literally by living through a toss of a coin. However, I found Josh as the main character quite annoying and selfish making this an irritable read. For instance when Eva is kindly trying to help him find 'Sunflower Girl' in Amsterdam the sarcastic comments and thoughts did not help sway the opinion. The story only really picked half way through with the travelling around Europe although the ending was enjoyable even if predictable. I found it difficult to connect with all of the characters and the flow of the story was disrupted with the random leaps and revelations.

The initial setup of the story sounds sad, and it is, but ultimately this is a fairly lighthearted and funny book. I stayed up late reading it and went through it like a tub of popcorn at a good movie. I do think the romance aspect was maybe the weakest part of the story, but overall this was a fun ride, and I'd recommend for a light easy read.

Book #100 read in 2020

OᐯᗴᖇᐯIᗴᗯ: When Josh’s girlfriend breaks up with him right after he proposes, he decides that he has made his last bad decision. He vows to spend the next year leaving all of his major life decisions up to the flip of a coin. When he randomly meets a woman who could be the one for him, will the coin let him be happy?

Well I started this in February and finished it today. It was fine, albeit a touch boring and I found Josh to be incredibly whiny.

Big plus was Jonny Bailey narrating, which was excellent.

This book has a fun premise. It's not often that you find a romance book set solely in the male's perspective. I really liked the idea of the main character flipping a coin to help him make choices in his life.

I didn't like that it didn't really fit my definition of clean. There were scenes where the main character called into adult phone lines. There was lots of drinking, and a little swearing.

The writing was well done. I really felt bad for the character that got dumped as he was proposing to his long time girlfriend, and subsequently lost his job and his living arrangements.

If you like a funny story where fate is left in the hands of a coin, then you will probably like this book. It just wasn't my cup of tea.

I enjoyed this but I wasn't convinced/interested in the central relationship? I thought it was introduced too late in the story. I still liked the concept though and it made me laugh.

My good God man, I thought the damn thing would never end.

At about 80% through the book I was seriously debating DNFing it. (Barely a half hour left and I couldn't bring myself to read it!!)

The romance aspect of the book was the weakest part. The story was much more amusing when it was just poor Josh taking a series of (very funny) Ls. A lot of the humour is very much the "oh, what am I like?" type of awkward, self-deprecating humour but it made me laugh out loud several times (notably the "birthday dinner"). Then he met Lucy and any flaws I previously overlooked because of the comedy became glaringly obvious. Lucy herself is a very Quirky™️ girl (Imagine never reading the ending of a book. Ever. Perhaps that's why the ending of this particular book was so terrible) and uninteresting. She also gets offended that he flipped a coin to come find her which, the fact that he even did is strange enough, yet it's the coin thing that bothers her? Josh himself takes no real action or responsibility, foisting all of that onto the coin. While the resolution is supposed to show him making his own decisions, that was not built up at all and he STILL 'flips the coin' during his big reunion with Lucy. Even in the end he makes the awfully convenient choice of traveling with his inheritance than actually making choices on what to do with his life. I really wish this had been a story about personal growth rather than the most eye roll inducing romance I've read in a while. They both fall too hard, too fast, and act like teenagers in their first relationship.

I did like reading a romance from a male perspective (always fun!) and I did like most of the humour in the first half. I wish Josh had been 25 or something and this had been about him taking responsibility or growing up rather than...this.

Also 'quizlamic extremists' is one of those jokes white people will make that I have to politely smile and move away after.

2/5 - I had SO much fun during the first half of this book but the second half was borderline intolerable
