Still engrossing, but not quite as satisfying to read. The last fourth was the best part of the book, but getting through that first 3/4 was a chore. It was still fun to read and I love Nemesis and Tyrus. It's certainly been an interesting ride! But this book wouldn't stand up on its own. I didn't really enjoy most of it;
I kept reading because I wanted to know what would become of Nemesis and Tyrus. The Empress was so painful (emotionally) to read and I wanted an explanation for Tyrus's actions. We certainly got one. But. While it's obviously what every reader wanted - what I wanted - I was also annoyed. Once Nemesis discovered Tyrus's real plan, it just felt like everything I'd read before had been a waste. The ultimate 'miscommunication' trope in some ways. Of course everything works out perfectly in the end! The way everything fell into perfect place so easily kinda ruined my enjoyment in the book and believability in the world Kincaid had created.

Even though it wasn't the most satisfying finale to this series, it still managed to end happily. So I guess I can't be too annoyed. The Diabolic is one of my favorite books, and The Empress is a pretty good sequel. I enjoyed the journey but probably won't be rereading The Nemesis anytime soon.

I had been looking forward to this book for about a year and a half, after loving the first two books in the series. Needless to say, the pressure on this book was huge. Did it live up to expectations? Mm, not quite, but I can't say that I'm utterly disappointed either. I felt like this was a more than worthy ending to the series, I just think it maybe needed a bit more substance to really knock it out of the park. There's definitely some serious repetition in this book,
Spoiler as Nemesis sets out time and again to deal with Tyrus, and make up for her previous failures, only to fall short. Of course, when I imagine how I would behave were I asked to assassinate my own husband, I can't think I would do even a little bit better, no matter how many atrocities he was committing. I absolutely can't fault Nemesis for that. However, it made for a much slower reading experience than I was expecting
. The book did still have crazy twists, as you would expect from the previous books in the series, but even those felt a bit toned down. I was expecting to be emotionally devastated by this book, and instead, I walked away just a bit shaken. Still, I am quite happy with the growth that Nemesis showed throughout the series, as well as the way that things ultimately ended up. I just felt like a few punches were pulled when they shouldn't have been.

I loved The Diabolic. I thought it was really clever, well thought out. Great world building. The Empress was, maybe, half a step down; still excellent, but not as excellent. Still, I had high hopes for The Nemesis, to see where all the story threads would lead.

Into a tangled mess, as far as I can tell. For one thing, it's nearly three years since I read the last one. There's no recap, there's no list of players. Even for readers with a better memory than I have, it can't be easy to keep track after so long. But, I'm reading an ARC and there may be differences in the final book.

The timeline is all over the place. We're mostly set a couple of years after the ending of the last book, as far as I can tell, but every so often Nemesis will have a completely unannounced flashback to some other time period to cover things that happened inbetween the books. I couldn't keep these in any kind of order.

This one's more personal; there's so much politics and double crossing and triple crossing and recrossing, I couldn't keep track of who was on what side for what reason and how long they'd been there. In particular, Nemesis herself danced back and forth between 'I must kill him' and 'I can't kill him' so many times she must have had whiplash by the end.

Other readers might enjoy this, and if you can read them as a series instead of spread out over five years they might be better. It's not for me I'm afraid.

This final book in the Diabolic trilogy somehow managed to echo a familiar theme carried throughout the series. That theme? Grabbing my emotions, twisting them beyond the breaking point, and putting them back together--then demolishing them again. Beautiful, philosophical, and incredibly timely, Kincaid has managed to finish up the end of a riveting story in a way that doesn't cheapen the resolution.
The Nemesis will be published three months from today, August 25th, 2020!
All the thanks to S.J. Kincaid and Eidelweiss for providing the ARC for my truthful review.

I just finished this and I need some time to process everything that happened. I loved this series and I will miss the characters and all their plans and schemes.

I have been waiting years to get my grubby hands on the last book in this trilogy and I can’t believe I finally did. The Diabolical series is one of the most original fantasies I’ve read and the series itself has continually surprised me from book one to now.

This book, like the other two in the series, was heartbreaking and full of twists and turns I never saw coming.

We get to see the final outcome of all of Nemesis and Tyrus efforts to reshape the corrupt Empire and while totally different all space opera give me Star Wars feelings.

I won’t be spoiling any of the plot of this book but I will say you don’t know what going to happen and don’t discount any characters and think you know them before the end.

Loved the first book in the series, however it was hard for me to finish this one. There were too many plot twists to the point where you can expcet anything to happen and the same "suprise" has happened three times already, so it is not surprising at all. Betrayal over betrayal over betrayal, but always with a longer plan in mind where it was not a real betrayal, it ended up being super predictable.

I really enjoyed this book. I know some people struggled to connect to the story, but I was fully sucked in. I wish the book had been a little longer. The last book left me shocked and this book kept me second guessing the entire time. I even found myself crying bit at certain parts. A good conclusion to the series.
