Another solid installment, but a little light on plot for me. I missed Darren's interaction with his friends, the trials were exciting but seemed to take up way too much of the time. The twist at the end is exciting though, and I'm looking forward to picking up where it left off.

Not as painful as the previous volume, but I think that was only because I read through so much of it at a time. It is, as a children's book, thankfully fast to read—just a few hours. Definitely more 'action' packed than the previous volume as well, however it's told mostly through passive description. All of Darren's trials feel like summary, and so much of the book feels like it's just him describing things that happened, with very little interaction with other characters. The ending, at least, felt less arbitrarily cut off, but I still think this book and the previous one would have been better as one volume.

Darren is shocked to learn that he has to face 5 terrifying trials to prove his worth as a vampire and if he fails he will be murdered in the Hall of Stakes. He has help to train but when all seems to be lost,is running away the best answer?

This was a great read. I was gripped by the trials and the tension over Darren's fate, and the impending war with the vampaneze.A really good horror read.

This book gave me the what was then the worst book-induced headache I had ever had. ;) I think I had a bit of a pause with this series and had probably forgotten some things about the characters and world, but even knowing that, I just couldn't forgive this one its flaws - character stupidity, weird plotting, gratuitous violence, least of all the huge cliffhanger ending - so it's really not that surprising it became one of the first series I expressly decided not to finish.
