This book was unique from others. The whole book builds your anticipation for when she’ll shift, when she’ll figure out her mother’s clues, and when she’ll be discovered by the Wake. Can’t wait for the next book!

Book with more supernatural elements than the usual fae and vampire. Slow burn romance between main characters and this first book sets the foundation for a take down of a corrupt system following clues to find relics. Based on Celtic mythology.
Easy to read and some great characters.

It had its interesting moments, and a handful of incredible lines… But mostly, I felt like it focussed more on making sure it ticked all of the boxes in the “first book in a fantasy trilogy” checklist, rather than trying to stand on its own.

Empyreals also feel extremely similar to vampires, which wouldn’t be a problem if vampires didn’t also canonically exist in-universe.

Overall, I’m intrigued enough to pick up the sequel when it comes out, but that’s due more to the fact that I enjoy Megan Scott’s writing style and I want to see how it develops in time with the next book, than it is a particular attachment to Nicole and Kyan’s relationship.
