My 9 year old son and I both adored this sweet story about a boy who tries to help a dog that is being mistreated by a local man.Great lessons about hard choices, how lies beget lies and how sometimes there can be more than one "right" thing to do.

Rating: 4/5 stars

Reading this with my 5th grade class. I haven't ever read this book and decided to use it this year. I really enjoyed the voice of Marty and appreciated Naylor's writing. Unlike other middle grade books, Shiloh did not go the cliche path. It was meaningful and touching. I recommend this as a great tool for teachers and a great read for parents and students.

Marty falls in love with his neighbor's dog, whom he names Shiloh. When he figures out the dog is being abused, he is determined to save him and keep him.

I first remember reading this around fourth grade. It still holds up. It is a timeless and beautiful story about compassion, determination and standing up for what is right.

A rousing 5 stars for this read-aloud story from my 11-year-old son

I read this aloud to my 11, 9, 7 and 5-year-old boys. It is beautifully written, and is the sort of story where you can’t help but put yourself in the protagonist’s shoes and wrestle with what you would have done in his place. I think this is going to be a favourite read-aloud of the year.
emotional hopeful lighthearted sad

As far as read-alouds go, this book was a bit more rough around the edges than most of the ones I’ve read with my young children. But here’s why I liked it — Marty shows us that making choices isn’t always easy; the right thing isn’t always obvious. This alone allowed for good discussions with my kids as we read Shiloh together. Judd Travers is probably the most realistic mean character they’ve ever met in a story, considering he’s not a witch or an evil queen.
I was afraid this might be a tough book for them to enjoy, but it held their attention with lots of tense moments and by the end they declared it a great book!

This is an adorable tale about a boy who finds a beagle Shiloh and vows to make it his dog. The problem is that Shiloh belongs to the next door neighbor Judd who mistreats his dogs. This is a sweet story about friendship, and what is truly good or bad
