the ending was a bit anticlimactic for me and i felt like it didn't really wrap up in a satisfying way but the writing was really good and the world and characters were well developed and i really enjoyed it overall

I’ve never read anything like this. I’ll have to read it again now that I’ve gone through it once. Mysterious, fascinating, dark, and surprisingly hard to put down.

This is a good book that is unfortunately less than the sum of its parts. It feels like there are two separate stories present which don’t mesh well. On one hand is a supernatural coming of age with a good mystery hook and some effective horror. On the other is a really interesting story of ancient family trees, a dark god, and the occult. It feels like the meshing of these two parts, and the order events were told in, did a disservice to the story as a whole.
The first section was a slog to get through. The rest of the book was compelling, with well written characters and interesting concepts, but things ultimately stretched too long - we are given too much information about how the cult works too early which dissolve mystery and tension that could have been built otherwise.
