4.2 AVERAGE

Creepy, disturbing and excellently written.

This is a good book that is unfortunately less than the sum of its parts. It feels like there are two separate stories present which don’t mesh well. On one hand is a supernatural coming of age with a good mystery hook and some effective horror. On the other is a really interesting story of ancient family trees, a dark god, and the occult. It feels like the meshing of these two parts, and the order events were told in, did a disservice to the story as a whole.

The first section was a slog to get through. The rest of the book was compelling, with well written characters and interesting concepts, but things ultimately stretched too long - we are given too much information about how the cult works too early which dissolve mystery and tension that could have been built otherwise.

First novel I read by the author, and it captivated me much more than all the short stories I’ve read by her. All the elements I had previously read separately came together in this story.

The morbid tone and paranormal events, among other things, depict this dark world led by Juan and Gaspar—presenting the dictatorship that took place in Argentina from a different angle.

The chapters were quite long and jumped around in time. Although at times I didn’t understand why certain things were being mentioned, as the pages went on, everything started to connect.

That said, I’m still disappointed with the very ending (the same thing happened to me with her short stories).
