At times the descriptions felt bloated, but it’s been a few days since I finished this book and I’m still thinking about it. Maybe that was the point then—the bloated descriptions I mean—to create this never ending sense of unease. It was hard for me to get through at times but I think it was achieving the author’s goal. And I really appreciated how cultural and political issues of Argentina were woven into the overall horror plot. I felt like I was learning something about a new place as I read.

pov you are absolutely obsessed with a book and then the ending drops the ball so hard that you have to put off writing a review for 3+ weeks because you're so conflicted
there's something about this book that just captivated me - it's beautiful and unique and so intelligently written, and i was convinced it would be a five star read for the writing style alone. i read the german translation and it's honestly breathtaking. the author strings together sentences that literally take my breath away and i wish my spanish was good enough to read this book in the original language.
the book has such a good execution of magical realism that feels so grounded, it has some of the best, flawed, three dimensional characters i've read in years, and the aesthetic themes are so good that i want to lie down in them. yes, the book drags on at parts, but that probably was on me. it's a haunting exploration of a political landscape that i knew nothing about, and it shows how perfectly art can utilize magical realism to give a face and shape to real horrors.
it's just a shame how much i disliked the ending/final part of the book. it feels rushed and contrary to the message/tone of the entire story beforehand, and in all honesty i felt like it ruined the 750+ pages build up and resolved in a way that would've been more appropriate for a ya novel. i don't know what happened there, but i am sad about it. very sad. i will pick up the author's other books because i'm obsessed with her writing style and horror aesthetics. i need to inject them into my veins

Yowza, what a book. Absolutely incredible. One of the darkest things I’ve ever read. This is almost several books in one, with each section focusing on a different time period or set of characters. The middle section of the kids growing up was my favorite, but they were all so good. The way everything tied together in the end was satisfying to me, but also the open-endedness was interesting as well. A vivid world, with vibrant characters. A blending of fictional and real atrocities that will haunt me for a long time. Please check the content warnings on this before reading, are are so many.
Graphic: Body horror, Child abuse, Confinement, Drug use, Emotional abuse, Genocide, Gore, Mental illness, Physical abuse, Self harm, Sexual assault, Suicidal thoughts, Terminal illness, Torture, Violence, Blood, Medical content, Kidnapping, Grief, Car accident, Suicide attempt, Death of parent, Murder, Schizophrenia/Psychosis , Colonisation, War, Injury/Injury detail
