his one was dark. And such a masterpiece I wish I could read it in its original Spanish.
I love that it didn't shy away from heavy themes — child abuse, queer relationships, political violence, and mental illness — and that the writer handled these without romanticizing or sanitizing them.
The world-building was rich, so much so that at times I didn't want to put the book down because I wanted to stay in it.
But what really drew me in was Juan. He is one of the most morally complex and captivating characters I’ve read in a while. He's abusive, manipulative, but fiercely protective and loving in his own broken way. He evoked a lot of conflicting emotions in me. At certain points, I found him hateful and yet I couldn't get enough of the character. In fact, I wish there was another chapter dedicated to his point of view. I think this is a testament to how well he was written.
It wasn't just Juan and Gaspar. All characters were developed with care and had meaningful arcs of their own.
My only wish: fewer meandering side plots and a better-paced ending. The final confrontation felt rushed, as if the book suddenly remembered it needed to wrap up.
I also wanted more from the supernatural horror side. What was there was powerful, but I craved more of it.
Overall, this was a deeply original, emotionally challenging read (especially at 700+ pages). Not perfect, but absolutely memorable. I would be recommending this book for years to come.

Librazo!
