The suspense in this book made it so hard to put down. I wanted to call in sick to work and do nothing but read it all damn day. I'm so happy to be back in the Luxen universe. I love the man Luc is growing up to be. My heart is broken over the losses we suffer in this one though. I can't wait to find out what exactly Evie is and what her powers are and if she can learn to control them without killing everyone. I'm also getting the biggest crush on Grayson. He should try Blue Razz Blow Pops though. I can't wait to see what the next book has in store for us! I hope we get to see more of the original characters too!
*BASED OFF AN ARC OF THIS BOOK*
I really liked the details the author put into this!! Even though it’s the second book, I still understood a lot on what was happening. :)

I was excited for this Ever since luc said in the lux series that he could never be lucky enough to be with nadia .
But after finishing the first two books ?
I am just filled with disappointment
The ending was not surprising just dumb
The romance scenes were very boring and
Evie was uninteresting
Luc one of my favourite characters of the lux series had this bullshit alpha male behavior that was so unlike him in the first half of the first book
And then in this one he was just corny
By the end the only thing that kept me going was hoping for two things
Nadia's return
And being reunited with the lux gang
And let me just say that this book maneged to ruin both of those things
IDK if will continue with series to be honest

“No, you’re the Burning Shadow and he’s the Darkest Star, and together you will bring the brightest night.”
Did I enjoy this? Yh boi
Would I read it again? probably.
Holy freakin’ Alien babies.
SO SO much happened in this instalment. We pick up right where we left off in The Darkest Star. Tomato soup and grilled cheese.
We have so many revelations and new issues arrive throughout this book that, at times it feels like an information overload. As I imagine it did for Evie. She’s got a lot to learn about this new world she’s returning too and with that a lot of memories that she wants to figure out.
The book is really well-paced and the balance of action vs character growth is brilliant. Evie is resilient and at times it seems to be a bit shocking for Luc and for other involved. Luc is opening up and I find we start to see the side of Luc that he doesn’t like to show often, if at all. We also learn about more about Evie and what’s in store for her. The direction in which Jennifer was taking Evie became apparent to me about a third of the way through this book, so, slightly predictable but it didn’t really matter for me. I’m also SO happy we got reunited with the old gang too. Seeing how far they’ve come since we left them in opposition warms my heart.
Jennifer writes with the balance of love, heartbreak and the characters sheer determination to find out what’s happened to her in mind as we go from chapter to chapter and it works very much in favour of the story. The fluidity of the plot is what engrosses you to the story and characters, which makes certain losses even more devastating. Now, as with the previous book, I noticed a few (and I really do mean a few) continuity issues with the plot, but not enough that it drew me out of the story too much when I noticed them.
Bottom line is, I recommend this series, especially if you’ve read the Lux Series. As spin-offs go, it doesn’t crash and burn as many do. Far from it actually. It has just the same amount of charm as it’s parent novels.

4.5 'We were made for each other' Stars!

THE BURNING SHADOW, the sequel of The Darkest Star from the Origin Series, kicks off right where we were left in the first book. Evie is still trying to come to terms with all the revelations about herself. That she's not really Evelyn Dasher at all, but instead Nadia Holliday - a girl who had a life threatening cancer but was saved by a serum containing alien DNA. Evie still has no memories of her past life as Nadia - or her past with Origin alien Luc. That doesn't help much with her blossoming feelings for him considering Luc loved Nadia and Evie doesn't know if he loves her for who she is now, too. You would think that would be enough for a girl to deal with, but things are never that easy in this world. A strange disease is sweeping the nation and all signs seem to point to the Luxen aliens of being the ones spreading it to humans - causing numerous casualties. Are the Luxen really the ones responsible for this flu-like virus? And why does it seem like this illness is somehow connected to Evie and her past? You'll have to read and figure out this mystery for yourselves ;)
If any of you thought the first book of this series was crazy, wait until you get your hands on this story. The stress level of reading this book was basically at 100 most of the time. There was never a dull moment. One thing would happen after another. I felt kinda bad for my babies Luc and Evie - they could never catch a break. It made the story exciting though so I can't really complain. The mystery of the virus affecting humans kept me reading non-stop because I just wanted answers. I wanted to know what it was, how it was spreading, and what it had to do with our girl Evie. Because as you read you see that there is a connection there. That's a big reason I couldn't put the book down because I just needed to know. JLA always delivers a good mystery in her paranormal/sci fi novels. And she's so good at making everything connect to each other that when you finally get the answers you think, "how did I not see this before?". Though I will admit I did guess like half of what was going on - I thought it was obvious. But overall the plot was interesting and exciting and with how things we left, I want book three NOW PLEASE!
Luc and Evie were so great together in this one. I shipped them even harder this time around. They had so many swoon-worthy moments. They made my heart melt and also made me get a little flushed because...dayum - you'll get it when you read it. Their connection really shined all throughout the book. And Luc stepped up his book boyfriend game, too. Dare I say he's giving Daemon a run for his money? Nah, let's just love them both!
I'm sure Lux series fans will be happy to know this book is full of cameos for your favorite characters! I got so giddy whenever they showed up. The cameos were so worth it! You will love seeing them all again. And from the looks of it, I think they will be more involved in the series from this point on which means more content of them! Yay!
So guys, when October 8th rolls around, definitely get yourself a copy of this. The story will suck you in from page one. You will laugh, swoon, get your heartbroken a time or two, and go on a thrilling ride with characters you've loved and ones you have come to love. You won't regret it!

Hmmmm... this is getting crazier and crazier! And I would say it's sooo romantic but that practically takes a back seat to... The Daedalus situation which OMG HELP ME!!!
I loved this second book. I adore Luc and Evie and the rest of the gang. I do kind of have a suspicion about one of her school friends though... YIKES! (Well 2 if I'm not counting the obvious)
I really felt like this was way more action packed and full of details that created a really unique story. In other words, it's not just Lux 2.0.
I definitely recommend this to anyone who loved Lux, especially if your a fan of Luc... cuz he's awesome, duh!

A compelling sequel, The Burning Shadow, has numerous twists and turns that keep the story entertaining.
Once again, the novel deals with complex themes such as immigration and xenophobia through a science fiction lens. People are using circumstances to spread fear and hatred to blind the masses, and it highlights something new about Evie, who was not necessarily indifferent in the previous novel, but she did not pick a side as she has in this novel. Evie has realized that keeping silent; she is not helping those who need help. Finally, Evie picks a side and raising her voice against the injustices, growing as a character and creating tension within the novel.
It is a great way to highlight important issues in society for all ages. It is an excellent read with intense development in the storytelling. It is energetic and moves quickly, telling the story with ease and evolving the mechanism behind the plot effortlessly. Despite the character development, there are times when Evie and Luc seem like Mary Sue caricatures. There are just too many times when they are too perfect, too powerful, too in touch with their power. It comes naturally to them, how they use it without difficulty. Nevertheless, Armentrout highlighted their flaws and explored them and the darkness that hovers at the fringes of their personas.
It is the flaws that make the characters so gravitating. Luc seems so perfect at times, but the dark lengths he is willing to go through make him so flawed, especially with the way Armentrout highlights how they haunt him and scar his soul. Moreover, the way Evie lets her fear and anger sometimes overwhelm her balance out her seemingly perfect output.
Both characters drive the story forward and bring up important issues. They make hard choices with the world changing around them.
By the end, the story has evolved so much and has made quite a fantastic sequel.
