I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The Burning Shadow is the exciting and stunning second book in Jennifer L Armentrout’s Origin Series.
When Evelyn Dasher crossed paths with Luc, she was thrown headfirst into the world of the Lux- only to discover that she was already far more involved in their world than she ever could have suspected.
There are gaps in Evie’s memory, lost months of her life and a lingering sense that something happened, something she can’t remember and nobody is willing to tell her. She needs to find out the truth about who she is- and who she was. But every answer she finds only brings up more and more questions.
Her search brings her closer to Luc, the Origin at the centre of it all. He’s powerful, arrogant, inhumanly beautiful and extremely dangerous… and possibly in love with her. But is Luc’s attraction to her, or to the memory of a girl he used to know and who no longer exists?
All the while, a new threat looms: a flu-like, a fatal virus the government insists is being spread by Luxen, A horrifying illness that changes whoever it touches, spreading panic across a country already at its breaking point.
Following on from the events of The Darkest Star, The Burning Shadow was a steamy, thrilling, and action-packed novel.
I was so excited to be able to read more about Evie and Luc, and I especially loved getting to see more about older characters from the original Lux Series.
The remarkably vivid world that JLA has created throughout the Lux Series and The Darkest Star continues, along with the strong character development and passionate chemistry between Luc and Evie.
I absolutely loved reading The Burning Shadow and cannot wait to read what’s to come.

“She was right and she was wrong. I wasn’t Nadia. I also wasn’t Evie. I had no idea who I really was.”

“Things between Luc and me were complicated, and it had nothing to do with the fact that I was a human and he was an Origin, and everything to do with who I used to be.
A girl Luc had loved and lost – a girl he still loved.
A girl who used to be me.
A girl I couldn’t remember no matter how hard I tried.”

“Because I’ve already waited forever for this - for you. I’ve done nothing but watch and wait, and I am not walking away again. If I kiss you, if I touch you again, I will not be able to go back to the way things are now.” The next breath he took trembled as much as I was. “I won’t be able to pretend that you aren’t my everything.”
I absolutely loved reading The Burning Shadow and cannot wait to read what’s to come.

Super interesting second book in the Origin series that left me wanting to read the next book immediately.
My only issue with this series (and its really an issue with JLA) is that there are some continuity issues from the Lux Series to this series. I have found that there usually are in the spinoffs that JLA writes. For example, in Lux it was just referred to as Daedalus, but in Origin its the Daedalus. And Dawson’s daughter was supposedly the first female Origin in Lux but in this series Zoe is a female Origin and was born before Ash. These are not big issues, but it does slightly take me out of the moment every time these things come up.

I was provided an ARC by the author in exchange for an honest review.
The Origin series, spin-off to the Lux series, continues with this book, The Burning Shadow. The sequel picks up right where we left off in The Darkest Star.
I'm not gonna try to summarize the book since it's a sequel and anything I could say would spoil the first book for anyone who hasn't read it yet.
I will say however that JLA hit a homerun again.
I’ve seen that some people thought it was a bit long but I was sucked in from the very first page and to me, it could have been even longer. I was captivated. I barely ever saw any twists and turns coming and I felt everything from beginning to end. It really was incredibly paced to me, every high, every low, a perfect rollercoaster.
I just love these characters so much. JLA’s characters are always so layered and relatable in different ways, you can’t help but connect with them and that really drove me throughout this book. I especially fell for some of the secondary characters who just touched me.
The relationships between the characters were also very complex and made me feel a lot, and when I say relationships, I mean the friendships as well the romantic relationships.
This series is turning out great, I cannot wait to read the next installment.

While this was an entertaining read, it was pretty repetitive and more romance heavy than the first book.

*Note: this review may contain spoilers. This is the second book in a series that should be read in order.
If you are new to this series, you can check out my review of book one- The Darkest Star HERE*
The Burning Shadow is the second book in the young adult Origin series by Jennifer L. Armentrout. The Origin series is a young adult paranormal/sci fi romance featuring aliens. It is a spin off of her Lux series, but you do not need to read that series first if you don't want to. I have not read the Lux series yet, but because I am loving the Origin series so much, I can't wait to pick up all the books in the Luc series and binge read them! I am not the biggest fan of aliens, but Luc, Emery Zoe and the whole gang are really making me rethink my position on aliens. I loved The Burning Shadow. It has even more twists and turns than the first book and it is by far my favorite Alien series that I have ever read.
The Burning Shadow takes place right after the events of the first book, and Evie is reeling from the bombshell that was dropped on her- that she used to be someone else entirely. Even though I saw this coming while I was reading the first book in the series, I never could have predicted everything that would mean for Evie as so many things come to light in this installment. I was so excited while reading this book because there was so much going on. We have Evie's ex friend April who is protesting the Luxen. We have the mystery surrounding what was done to Evie. We have the mysterious message that was delivered by crazy Micah, and we have growing tensions all over the world. Not to mention the mysterious illness that is spreading around, killing people. When I first picked up this book and I saw a flu like sickness killing people, ,I thought "Oh no! this is going to hit wayy too close to home." But this is no normal sickness because those that do not die, do change. This book felt creepier than the first book and I loved every single second of it! It kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time I was reading.
And the romance aspect was great. Evie and Luc still crackle off the page! I just love the two of them, and I have such a soft spot for Luc. I love how protective he is of Evie and I loved that their romance amped up in The Burning Shadow. If you liked The Darkest Star, then you will love The Burning Shadow even more. I know I did! I cannot wait to read the next book and continue on with this series. This ending has left me super happy to have the next book ready to go because it is intense. The origin series is perfect for fans of paranormal romance and science fiction alike. I love the Origin series so much!

THE BURNING SHADOW, the sequel of The Darkest Star from the Origin Series, kicks off right where we were left in the first book. Evie is still trying to come to terms with all the revelations about herself. That she's not really Evelyn Dasher at all, but instead Nadia Holliday - a girl who had a life threatening cancer but was saved by a serum containing alien DNA. Evie still has no memories of her past life as Nadia - or her past with Origin alien Luc. That doesn't help much with her blossoming feelings for him considering Luc loved Nadia and Evie doesn't know if he loves her for who she is now, too. You would think that would be enough for a girl to deal with, but things are never that easy in this world. A strange disease is sweeping the nation and all signs seem to point to the Luxen aliens of being the ones spreading it to humans - causing numerous casualties. Are the Luxen really the ones responsible for this flu-like virus? And why does it seem like this illness is somehow connected to Evie and her past? You'll have to read and figure out this mystery for yourselves ;)
If any of you thought the first book of this series was crazy, wait until you get your hands on this story. The stress level of reading this book was basically at 100 most of the time. There was never a dull moment. One thing would happen after another. I felt kinda bad for my babies Luc and Evie - they could never catch a break. It made the story exciting though so I can't really complain. The mystery of the virus affecting humans kept me reading non-stop because I just wanted answers. I wanted to know what it was, how it was spreading, and what it had to do with our girl Evie. Because as you read you see that there is a connection there. That's a big reason I couldn't put the book down because I just needed to know. JLA always delivers a good mystery in her paranormal/sci fi novels. And she's so good at making everything connect to each other that when you finally get the answers you think, "how did I not see this before?". Though I will admit I did guess like half of what was going on - I thought it was obvious. But overall the plot was interesting and exciting and with how things we left, I want book three NOW PLEASE!
Luc and Evie were so great together in this one. I shipped them even harder this time around. They had so many swoon-worthy moments. They made my heart melt and also made me get a little flushed because...dayum - you'll get it when you read it. Their connection really shined all throughout the book. And Luc stepped up his book boyfriend game, too. Dare I say he's giving Daemon a run for his money? Nah, let's just love them both!
I'm sure Lux series fans will be happy to know this book is full of cameos for your favorite characters! I got so giddy whenever they showed up. The cameos were so worth it! You will love seeing them all again. And from the looks of it, I think they will be more involved in the series from this point on which means more content of them! Yay!
So guys, when October 8th rolls around, definitely get yourself a copy of this. The story will suck you in from page one. You will laugh, swoon, get your heartbroken a time or two, and go on a thrilling ride with characters you've loved and ones you have come to love. You won't regret it!

I'm a huge fan of the Lux series, so it should be no surprise that love has transferred to the spin-off.
The Burning Shadow picks up where [b:The Darkest Star|34221193|The Darkest Star (Origin, #1)|Jennifer L. Armentrout|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1526240882l/34221193._SY75_.jpg|55272995] left off, with Evie still processing the attack by an origin and the shake up of her world. The beginning of this one was a little slow for me. It picks up right where The Darkest Star left off, and the first 40% is mainly spent with Evie ruminating in self doubt about her identity. It's not until this mark that the main "conflict" of this book is revealed, but after it is it's nearly impossible to put down!
This books is pretty graphic and bloody and I loved every second of it. I feel like Armentrout knew that many of the readers would be original readers of the Lux series and aged up the content to match more of a New Adult audience. There were some pretty shocking deaths and revelations (hello, massive cliff hanger!) and I'm excited to see how the story will change because of them. I read somewhere that this series is projected to go on for about five books and I'm not entirely sure how thats going to happen with the current storyline - unless we get a Lux series 2.0 situation with the end of the world.
Definitely a book and series that I recommend - although some of the reunions and world-building will be better understood if you read the Lux series first! I'll be anxiously awaiting the next installment!
