4.5★

I was a bit wary, yet hopefully, coming into this one because I didn’t love TDS like I really wanted to, but JLA redeemed herself. I LOVED it soooo much!!

I absolutely loved the characters here. The friend circle was so much fun, everyone had a different personality and quirk. A lot more characters were introduced (or re-introduced). It was nice seeing the old gang *tear* all grown up.

Luc was amazing. Hilarious as always and I am so happy to have more of him in this book. (Chapter 19 was my fav!) I don’t feel like we got quite enough of him last time and it was more focused on Evie. I do like her a lot more this time around. Her character has developed into a stronger, more independent woman and not such a naive, blasé high school girl.

I’m not a huge fan of problems being pulled out of the air or things being a little too far fetched and there were a few moments or plot holes that interrupted the balance. I can overlook it, but it still bothers me. Maybe it’s just me and my pickiness, but I feel like JLA often misses details that shouldn’t be missed or things don’t line up properly.

Mistakes aside, JLA sure does know how to amp up the action. I found myself numerous times jumping sentences and paragraphs because I was freaking out and couldn’t read fast enough. More than once I even found myself stopping and saying out loud, to no one in particular, “WHAT TF IS HAPPENING?!” There were so many plot twists and things going on that I was not expecting until they happened and then I was stunned. Definite Origin-level intensity here. I wouldn’t say quite as huge as Origin, but definitely up there. I crushed this book in about 48 hours. I could NOT put it down!

All around I thought like TDS was lacking in every area, but it was all made up for here. I am so excited for the next book and what’s to come. Here comes the LONGEST. YEAR. EVER.

P.S. Did we get a potential teaser for the next book title??

I received an ARC via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.

It is no secret that I love JLAs books. This picks up right where [b:The Darkest Star|34221193|The Darkest Star (Origin, #1)|Jennifer L. Armentrout|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1526240882l/34221193._SY75_.jpg|55272995] left off. Evie has just discovered a big secret about her identity and her connection with everyone's favorite Origin, Luc. As their relationship develops, their chemistry is undeniable. As Evie having an identity crisis, she struggles with with understanding if Luc's feelings are for her or the girl he thinks he knows and if her friends are really truly her friends. While all that is happening, people start getting sick at school, and the fear and hatred against Luxen gets worse.

Despite the length of this book, I'm finding it hard to write this review without spoiling things. This book is long, well over pages, but it keeps you engaged and I didn't feel like parts of it dragged or were repetitive. All of the information was relative to the story and the build of the plot. We get more character development from Evie and especially Luc in this installment. We get information about their past and much more emotion from Luc than we've ever seen in the past. I really enjoyed the development of their relationship, their friendships with the other characters, and the science fiction elements of the story.

If you were a fan of the Luxen fan and enjoy YA paranormal romance, give this series a try. The series are similar, but they aren't the same. We also get to see characters from the original series and I enjoy watching their interactions as they've all grown up since we last saw them. I will say this does end on a cliffhanger, but if you are paying attention you kind of can see it coming. I wasn't shocked by the reveal I was just shocked that it ended so abruptly and I have to wait for the next book. Overall this is a great sequel and a great spinoff series.

All the stars!! Luc is the best. Dare I say he may be even better than Daemon‽‽

Full review to come.

We jump back into this world, thinking everything has settled down but of course we can never have peace for that long.

There are strange things happening to humans, who seem to be dying from the flu. Meanwhile, the Lux community is being targeted by everyone like an evil community; that everyone including the government wants to blame for everything strange that is going on.

We really get to see that if one person commits a crime we tend to put blame on the whole group because they seem to fit the niche. But everyone is different, and the actions of some cannot be placed on all.

The relationship between Evie and Luc starts to develop into a 'real' thing. Luc reminds me of Demon soo much, which his protective instinct towards Evie. Luc made me laugh out soo many times, I love his vibe and attitude and he would always put her life above his!!!

Even though this book had more of a slow pacing, it really worked for this book. This book was my constant companion during my exams because it gave me a breath of fresh air.

That ending though!!!! I feel like I say this for every book (lol)

A lot of new things are revealed, and not all of them are good, actually, they aren't. Things are going to change BIG time.

I... I have so many thoughts... SOOO many! I have so many that my brain can't even comprehend how to articulate any of them. I need the next book NOW!

(SPOILERS: don't read if you haven't finished yet)
Also, did Luc know? Like, know know? Because I keep going back to this line: "Luc was … he was drawing … symbols? An idle circle. A star. An … ampersand?"

Like, he was basically drawing The Burning Shadow & The Darkest Star. And he kept saying they were "made" for one another... WHAT DOES THIS MEAN!!!!!

The first half of the book: Amazing. For me personally, 5 stars.

The second half of the book: Eh. I feel like the choices Evie made were poor. The questions she asked were wrong. Tbh, I was pretty mad at everything she and Luc did. There was just too much focus being placed on things that shouldn't be. I just wish for more rather than mediocre.

I'm sad.

p.s. Half through reading this, I just realized this is an urban fantasy romance. I love my UF.

The only bad thing about this book is that it was so good I couldn’t put it down and now I’m finished and lord knows when the third book will come out but I need more Luc and Evie in my life.

I read an ARC of this. I am impressed by JLA's continued world expanding of the Luxen. What started off how many books ago is still having payoffs in this book. I love Luc, maybe even more than Daemon, because of his vulnerability underneath all that power. I love Evie for her bravery in the face of the unknown. With a whole set of newer side characters and ones returning from the original series, I can wait to read the ending to Luc and Evie's story whenever it comes.
adventurous dark emotional funny mysterious medium-paced
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: Complicated
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

It's hard to rate this series higher when it feels just like a copy and paste of the first series. They're entertaining and really fast to read but it still has tropes that I thought were left behind in 2014. Also, Evie kind of annoys me because she's so bland.
